Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie: Why Things Are Probably Awkward
As one of the newest members of the royal family, Meghan Markle has a lot of new relatives to get to know. One of them is Princess Eugenie, the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew. Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie have a lot in common, including their 2018 wedding dates and their Kensington Palace addresses. They reportedly get along well. But things might get awkward between Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie for a few reasons.
Below, discover the things that could come between Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie.
Princess Eugenie is ‘copying’ Meghan Markle’s wedding
Some columnists have accused Princess Eugenie of “copying” Meghan Markle’s wedding. People notes that fans will do “a few double takes” when Eugenie and fiancé Jack Brooksbank tie the knot. Eugenie and Jack will get married at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. (The same venue that Meghan and Harry chose.) They’ll also invite members of the public, like Meghan and Harry did. Plus, they’ll take a carriage ride. (Just as Meghan and Harry did.) And interestingly enough, neither couple signed a prenup.
However, it seems that Meghan doesn’t mind the similarities. A source told People that there is “zero competition” between Eugenie and Jack and Harry and Meghan. A friend of Princess Eugenie told the magazine, “It is complete love, and there is room for all of them,” referring to the cousins and their partners.
Eugenie and Meghan have very different histories with their partners
Princess Eugenie and Meghan Markle have very different dating histories. Especially when it comes to the men they’ve chosen to marry. People reports that Eugenie has spent seven years with her fiancé, Jack. Meghan, on the other hand, dated Prince Harry for about 15 months before the two got engaged. Neither timeline is better than the other, but they are very different.
Another way that Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie differ greatly? Their place within the royal family, and the popularity they have with the public. Eugenie has been a royal her entire life. But she has never enjoyed popularity as one of the higher-profile members of the family. Meghan has spent a relatively short time with Prince Harry. But she found herself in the limelight thanks to Harry’s central role in the royal family. And she’s just as popular as you’d expect given her marriage to a son of Princess Diana — which brings us to Prince Charles, Harry’s father.
Prince Charles’ plans for the royal family don’t include Eugenie
The Express reports that Prince Charles has long wanted to “streamline” the royal family. MSN explains that Prince Charles has a vision for how the royal family will operate when the queen has passed away, and he succeeds her to the throne. Essentially, Charles’s plan would sideline Prince Andrew, Eugenie, and Beatrice. MSN explains:
As an increasing number of duties are split between the queen, Prince Charles, Camilla Parker-Bowles, William, Kate, and Harry, it inevitably means that the queen’s other three children, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward, along with Andrew’s daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie and Edward’s wife, Sophie, are being shuffled away from center stage.
Charles reportedly “would like to preside over a unit solely made up of those directly surrounding the throne.” Worried about concerns over how the royal family spends money, he wants to ensure “that ‘peripheral’ royals will not be supported by public funds and will need to make their own money.” That would include Eugenie, and the difference between the lifestyles of Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie would become even more obvious.
Meghan Markle may feel uncomfortable at Eugenie’s wedding
Another source of awkwardness between Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie? The guest list for Eugenie’s upcoming wedding. Eugenie’s mother, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, will certainly attend. But Prince Philip and the Duchess of York don’t get along at all. And that could make family photos stressful for Meghan and for the other royals in attendance.
Plus, Eugenie’s guest list will also include one of Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriends: Cressida Bonas. Eugenie considers her a close friend. And she may even ask Cressida to serve as a bridesmaid. But if we had to guess, the Duchess of York will probably make Meghan Markle more uncomfortable than Cressida will. Especially if she tries to bond with Meghan over what a “palace insider” characterized as similarities between the Duchess of York and the Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan Markle has to follow royal rules that Eugenie doesn’t
The Express reports that despite being born into the royal family, Princess Eugenie isn’t technically a working royal. So while she does have to do things like pay rent, she doesn’t have to follow many of the rules that Meghan Markle — as a working royal — does need to follow. For instance, Eugenie can wear dark nail polish while Meghan can’t. Meghan wore many dark colors of nail polish before her engagement. But she now wears either nude or pink.
Eugenie can also have a public social media presence. And she remains the only member of the royal family with a public, personal Instagram account. Meghan, on the other hand, can’t have public social media accounts. She even shut down her lifestyle blog in 2017. Additionally, Eugenie can — and does — have a job outside of the royal family. But Meghan had to end her acting career. And, interestingly enough, Harry had to get the queen’s permission to marry Meghan — a formality that Eugenie didn’t need to go through before her engagement to Jack.
