Meghan Markle Believed the Media Favored Kate Middleton More Than Her, According to Her Friend

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex were hassled so much by the media that they decided the royal life wasn’t worth the harassment and decided their only option was to leave it all behind. The constant scrutiny from the press took its toll and one of Meghan’s friend claims that the duchess believed that the media were more favorable toward Catherine, Duchess of Sussex than they were to her.

Prince Harry shared his concerns about the negative media attention

Both Prince Harry and Meghan addressed how harmful the negative press attention had become when they spoke in interviews for their 2019 documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey. Harry was very concerned, given the experience his mother Princess Diana had with the press, and voiced his concern about his wife and son Archie’s safety.

“Part of this job, and part of any job, like everybody, means putting on a brave face and turning a cheek to a lot of the stuff, but again, for me and for my wife, of course there is a lot of stuff that hurts, especially when the majority of it is untrue,” he explained.

Prince Harry added, “But all we need to do is focus on being real, and focus on being the people that we are, and standing up for what we believe in. I will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum.”

Has the media been kinder to Kate?

One of Meghan’s friends said the duchess thought the royal family would have done more for her sister-in-law, had she faced the same level of negative media attention.

Meghan touched on some of the scrutiny she had endured during the documentary interview. “I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair, and that is the part that is really hard to reconcile,” Meghan shared.

She never got that fair reporting and, according to her friend, the duchess believed that if Kate had to suffer the scrutiny she had, the royal family would have done more to protect her.

“[Meghan said] no one would have put up with it, and the broken and outdated system would have been revised,” the friend told the Daily Mail. “Those outlets responsible for their vicious attacks would have been shut out.”

Kate never faced the same negativity that Meghan was up against, but it’s unclear if any action would have been taken by the royals to stop it if she had been criticized as much as the Duchess of Sussex. “If Kate was being criticized no one would put up with it,” the insider shared, noting that Meghan believed that the palace “favored” Kate and may have enforced media policies as a result.

The insider further shared that what “irritated Meghan and Harry the most” was that had the media “constantly criticized and needlessly bashed Kate the way they did her, changes within the royal’s media policy would have been made. No questions asked.”

The Sussexes took action themselves

After making their exit from the royal family, Prince Harry and Meghan could take action against the media as they saw fit. They wrote letters to four UK tabloids, essentially cutting them off with a “no corroboration and zero engagement” policy after they had treated Meghan so poorly.

“Meghan said Harry needed to take a stand for her, their son and his mother,” the source explained of their decision to boycott these outlets.
