Meghan Markle Is No Longer Allowed to Close Her Own Car Door — Here’s Why
In her early days as a member of the royal family, Meghan Markle received praise for closing her own car door. However, her humble habits were kicked to the curb by the Duchess of Sussex’s security team. Find out why Meghan Markle can no longer close her own car door, ahead.
Meghan Markle closes her own car door
When Meghan Markle was first introduced to royal life, the Duchess of Sussex often didn’t wait for her security team to close her car door. Instead, the former actress and non-royal did the deed herself. However, since then, security has become even tighter and the royal police had to put a stop to Meghan Markle’s gesture.
Before joining the royal family, Meghan Markle probably didn’t think much about her car door — especially when it came to the opening and closing of it. However, things are different now and the Duchess of Sussex must comply with the royal family’s security protocol in order to keep herself and future child out of harm’s way.
The cars Meghan Markle rides in on her way to royal engagements feature self-locking doors for security reasons. And while it’s a nice — and smart — feature to have, it could also pose a potential threat if the duchess closes her own door. “God forbid if anything did go wrong arriving at a royal engagement, security needs to be able to get them back into cars in seconds if need be,” a security source told The Sun. “If they’re closed and locked, it’s impossible,” they added.
Security rules Meghan Markle must always follow
In addition to allowing her security to close her car doors, Meghan Markle must follow a host of other royal security rules. Keep reading to find out how the Duchess of Sussex keeps her safety a top priority, ahead.
The Duchess of Sussex might be able to drive but she never drives herself to a royal engagement. Instead, Meghan Markle utilizes the royal family’s chauffeured vehicles to ensure proper safety precautions.
Bodyguards and security personnel
In addition to chauffeured cars, Meghan Markle and her family always travel with a posse — a security posse, that is. Since they usually cause a frenzy, the royals must always think about their safety. According to The Mirror, each member of the royal family travel with five armed guards on them at all times.
Meghan Markle and other members of the royal family often travel with a police escort to double up on their safety efforts. Traveling with police allows them to not only avoid dangerous situations but also helps ensure they get from point A to point B in a sufficient manner.
Different driving routes
For places that Meghan Markle regularly visits — such as Kensington Palace — the Duchess of Sussex’s security will most-likely consider taking a different driving route. This is something Prince William and Kate Middleton’s security practice almost every day, on their way to Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s school.
“You can’t keep using the same route all the time because you don’t want to give the bad guys who would do you harm information,” royal protection officer, Simon Morgan shared with Metro.
