The Real Reason Meghan Markle Refused to Open Gifts at Her Baby Shower
Meghan Markle had quite the New York City baby shower. Earlier this week, the Duchess of Sussex gathered with her closest friends in celebration of the upcoming royal baby. Serena Williams, Genevieve Hills, and Jessica Mulroney (a rumored godmother candidate for Baby Sussex) hosted the festivities in a penthouse at The Mark Hotel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Upon leaving the city, the Duchess of Sussex donned one of her baby shower gifts — an $850 18-carat gold Jennifer Meyer “mommy” necklace. However, it was the only baby shower gift Meghan Markle opened. The

In addition to Serena Williams, Genevieve Hills, and Jessica Mulroney, over a dozen of Meghan Markle’s closest A-list friends — including Amal Clooney and Abigail Spencer — attended the royal baby shower. CBS This Morning asked Gayle King (who also attended the shower) what she brought the mother-to-be, to which she replied: “If I told you, I’d have to kill you because she didn’t open any of the gifts.”
The real reason Meghan Markle didn’t want to open her baby shower gifts at the festivities? Apparently, “she wants to do that when she and Harry are back together,” confirmed King. Besides, the Duchess of Sussex had plenty of other things to focus on.

The Duchess of Sussex’s friends forked over a pretty penny for the royal mother-to-be. The penthouse at The Mark Hotel allegedly set them back $75,000 and Meghan Markle’s private jet home cost around $125,000 and was covered by Amal Clooney (who flew back to London with Meghan Markle). Meghan Markle opted out of traditional baby shower activities and instead wowed guests with a task that aligned with the Duchess of Sussex’s values. According to King, she partnered with Repeat Roses, an organization that recycles floral arrangements from parties and events and delivers them to patients at cancer treatment centers and hospice care.
With the help of an instructor, guests learned how to create unique floral arrangements and later donated them to the charity. “I’ve never seen anything like this at a baby shower,” King told CBS. “It just speaks to who she is. She’s very kind, she’s very generous and a really, really sweet person,” she added.
No baby shower is complete without food and dessert. The Duchess of Sussex’s baby shower featured food provided by The Mark Hotel’s world-renowned head chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten. They also snacked on stunningly decorated sugar cookies — which Meghan Markle’s makeup artist later shared on Instagram — and cotton candy.
In addition to keeping everyone busy with a floral arrangement class, guests also enjoyed musical entertainment. New York City-based harpist and singer, Erin Hill performed at Meghan Markle’s baby shower.
