Meghan Markle Explains Why She Stays Off Twitter

It’s no big surprise that Meghan Markle isn’t the biggest social media fan, given the fact that she’s been bullied countless times online by trolls. Given that level of abuse, Markle has found the best tactic is to just avoid Twitter altogether.

Meghan Markle explains the reasons why she dislikes Twitter

During a panel discussion at King’s College in London for International Women’s Day, Markle chatted a bit about leaving Twitter behind once she joined the royal family. She also avoids newspapers because it’s just not worth reading something potentially negativ about herself.

Markle noted: “I don’t read anything, it’s much safer that way, but equally that’s just my own personal preference, because I think positive or negative, it can all sort of just feel like noise to a certain extent these days.”

The Duchess of Sussex further explained that “as opposed to getting muddled with that,” she finds that avoiding Twitter allows her “to focus on the real cause.”

The responsibility of social media users

Markle also discussed how it’s necessary to not “feed into negativity” and that it is possible to keep social media out of our lives. She shared: “It’s our responsibility. We make a choice in what we click on, we make a choice in what we read, we make a choice in what we engage in. That is our personal decision, to not feed into negativity.”

When asked if she ever looks at Twitter, Markle was quick to say: “My personal decision is to not to feed into negativity and be more cause-driven, action-based. For me it’s a tricky one, because I’m not part of any of that. I don’t look at it. Sorry, no. For me that is my personal preference.”

She keeps the focus on positivity

Markle was quick to point out that there are ways to keep the engagement positive, pointing out that there is “journalism that’s really covering things that are going to make an impact.”

She continued: “Things like that, that are really talking about how the role of women is really shifting and changing. That’s key. Focus your energy there and not on the stuff that is perhaps muddling you.”

Kensington Palace recently issued social media guidelines

Markle’s remarks come on the heels of Kensington Palace releasing their official guidelines for social media. Their rules, they explained, were designed “to help create a safe environment on all social media channels run by The Royal Family, Clarence House and Kensington Palace.”

The guidelines also explain: “The aim of our social media channels is to create an environment where our community can engage safely in debate and is free to make comments, questions and suggestions.”

The main takeaway from their rules about social media use, Kensington Palace noted, is that anyone “engaging with our social media channels shows courtesy, kindness and respect for all other members of our social media communities.”

In part, the palace noted that comments left on their social media channels must not “contain spam, be defamatory of any person, deceive others, be obscene, offensive, threatening, abusive, hateful, inflammatory or promote sexually explicit material or violence.”
