Meghan Markle Finds the Way She’s ‘Pitted Against’ Kate Middleton ‘Challenging’
There’s not much debate that Meghan Markle has had a pretty challenging year, as she admitted during an interview for the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey that life in the spotlight has been particularly difficult. According to a source, part of the issues she’s faced include the way the media has created a narrative that she and Kate Middleton are feuding.
Markle and Middleton have been “pitted against” each other
Not a week goes by, it seems, that there isn’t a headline pointing to a rumored feud between Markle and Middleton. While the two have appeared friendly enough on multiple occasions, it’s been easy for the media to spin a story of some kind of rift between them.
This has been “challenging” for both women, according to a royal source, who told People: “Meghan is very aware that Kate will be Queen; their roles are very clear.” The insider added, “Meghan doesn’t fit the mold, while Kate was groomed for this,” noting that Markle was a “fully formed person” when she joined the royal family, versus Middleton, who was still in college when she met Prince William.
The insider added: “What’s challenging is when they are pitted against each other. That’s been challenging to both of them. Meghan has her life, Kate has hers.”
Prince Harry and Markle’s Christmas plans are adding fuel to the feud rumors
Prince Harry and Markle have started a six-week break from royal duties and then will spend the Christmas holiday with Markle’s mother rather than the traditional gathering with the royal family.
That “snub” has only fueled the rumors of tension among the Sussexes and Cambridges, despite Queen Elizabeth supporting Prince Harry and Markle’s plans and Prince William and Middleton missing the Christmas at Sandringham themselves in the past.
Author and former royal correspondent Phil Dampier believes that the Sussexes’ change of holiday plans isn’t helping to heal the tension with the royal family. He told MailOnline: “It’s very hard to see this as anything other than a snub to the Queen and the rest of the royal family. It shows there is a deep rift.”
He noted: “If Harry and Meghan wanted to heal the divisions they should have turned up at Sandringham. It’s a great shame but there seems to be a problem which is getting worse, not better.”
Dampier further explained: “I don’t buy it’s the turn of Meghan to spend Christmas with her family. She’s only close to her mother and they will see plenty of her during their six-week break. I’m sure that the Queen would be happy to invite Doria to Sandringham to join them.”
The Sussexes’ emotional interviews revealed their struggles
It was clear from their interviews that Prince Harry and Markle have gone through a lot, as Markle admitted that the constant media scrutiny has been difficult. She told interviewer Tom Bradby: “It’s not enough to just survive something, that’s not the point of life. You have got to thrive.”
Prince Harry addressed the rumors of a rift between him and Prince William and seemed to confirm that they aren’t as close as they used to be, noting, “we are on different paths at the moment.”
A source told People that Prince Harry and Markle’s relationship has not improved, noting, “Nothing has changed. They don’t speak, no one is checking in, no one is texting.”
