Meghan, Duchess of Sussex is a multitalented individual. Fans watched her go from famous actress to royal duchess without batting an eye. But even before taking on royal duties, Meghan was more than just an actress.
She created her own lifestyle website, The Tig, almost singlehandedly. Once Meghan announced her engagement to Prince Harry she took the site down and closed the social media accounts she used to promote her brand. If she hadn’t been forced to close up shop, The Tig could have been big.
The Tig could have been Meghan Markle’s Goop
It’s hard to talk about wellness brands without referencing Goop. Gwyneth Paltrow’s infamous website is one of the most successful wellness brands out there — and one of the most controversial. While Goop is often thought of as the butt of a joke, there’s no doubt it’s been a success. Paltrow has spun the site into a magazine and even a television show.
The Tig could have been on a Goop level. Meghan was never as controversial as Paltrow. But in the few years she had the blog, it amassed almost a million followers. It was a great platform for Meghan to give life advice and also to promote brands.
The wellness industry has also seen a boom. Currently, it is reportedly a $4.2 trillion industry. Meghan was in the arena well before the boom, so it is possible she could have capitalized off of it with her own lines. That said, there’s no guarantee the then-actress would or could pursue that path.
But not all is lost. If Meghan were able to make a popular wellness blog before she became a royal, any site she endorses now would have much more exposure. She could possibly even surpass Paltrow in viewership.
Meghan Markle has broad appeal
A website called Meghan’s Mirror popped up shortly after Prince Harry and Meghan announced their engagement. It’s dedicated to all things Meghan, including reviving old posts from The Tig.
The site is run by Effervescence Media. A spokesperson for the company said that while a similar blog dedicated just to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is popular among older American women, Meghan’s Mirror has a wider fan base. Plus, many African-American women love her, too, as she makes them feel represented in the royal family.
Basically, Meghan as a brand offers something for everyone.
Will Meghan Markle revive The Tig?
Meghan is about to have a lot more time on her hands. She and Prince Harry are officially done with royal duties. They had their last engagement earlier this month. Everyone has been asking what’s next for the couple, but the reality is they may not have to do anything.
Prince Harry and Meghan probably have enough cash to get by without having to work a day again. That’s not what they want, based on the hints they’ve dropped about their future.
Meghan could go back to acting or get involved with entertainment at another level, such as a producer. Based on the success The Tig has had even when it was taken down, Meghan may want to start another wellness brand.
However, she probably doesn’t have time to write all the content herself like she was doing before. And now that she has royal credit to her name, she may want to rebrand. We’ll just have to wait and see whether The Tig comes back under a different name.
