Does Queen Elizabeth Disapprove of Meghan Markle’s Celebrity Friends?

Queen Elizabeth and Meghan Markle appear to have a close relationship as daughter- and grandmother-in-law. However, the Duchess of Sussex’s celebrity friends could tarnish her chances at continued approval from Her Majesty. Up until recently, the Queen of England — who is notoriously conservative, frugal, and abides by the rules — allowed Meghan Markle to speak about feminism (a royal no-no) and occasionally bend the royal rulebook. But, on the heels of her $200,000 Hollywood-worthy baby shower, the queen might have had enough.

Before Meghan Markle joined the royal family, she called some of the world’s most influential women (including Serena Williams) her friends. But, now, as the Duchess of Sussex, her access to powerful women is at an all-time high — and the queen might have some concerns.

Through her relationship with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has befriended several women, including Oprah (who’s best friend, Gayle King attended Meghan Markle’s baby shower) and Amal Clooney. These women, as well as others in her inner circle, could be partially to blame for Meghan Markle’s unique royal path and might encourage her to make her own changes to the royal protocol.

“This group of friends are [sic] going to be telling Meghan to not listen to what some stuck up, boring members of the royal households are telling you,” says royal commenter, Dan Wootton. Wootton suggests that some of her celebrity friends — especially someone like Gayle King — could give her publicity advice. They might also advise her to stray from the family’s rules once she fully settles into her royal role.

Such guidance might help ease Meghan Markle at a time when royal feuds and family drama have made their way into the press.

The queen might not only have concerns about how the Duchess of Sussex’s friend group might influence the royal family. She could also be wondering the same things as Wootton. “The fact she is prepared to keep these people around her shows that she’s going to make some real change,” he suggested to talkRADIO listeners.

.In her early months as a royal, the duchess made some major changes to her life — which some thought could have also impacted her friend group. However, it’s clear now that Meghan Markle is closer than ever to her old and new celebrity besties.

The baby shower might not seem like a big deal, but it defied the royal family’s strict protocol. Baby showers typically go against tradition in Meghan Markle’s new world. Royals see baby showers as highly inappropriate, as they can go out and purchase items for a royal baby themselves. Although her friends paid for her baby shower, the queen might not have approved of the festivities.

At the end of the day, all her friends did was throw her a baby shower. However, the hefty price tag and luxurious details of the celebration have left some — including Wootton — questioning how Meghan Markle’s friends could persuade the duchess to stray from royal protocol and carve out her own space from within the Mountbatten-Windsor family.
