Meghan Markle Gave Up These Favorite Fashion Trends to Join the Royal Family
Meghan Markle has had to give up a lot from her past life to join the royal family. From shutting down her social media accounts to losing her U.S. citizenship, she’s had to make quite a few adjustments. One thing that was likely difficult to give up? Her freedom to wear whatever she wants.
While she’s put her own mark on royal fashion, she’s had to swear off wearing certain fashion trends in public for good. Here are some of Markle’s favorite styles we’ll never get to see her wear again.
Colorful nail polish
For starters, we’ll never get to see Markle rocking bright or daring hues on her nails again. One of Queen Elizabeth II’s biggest pet peeves is colorful nail polish, so it’s something Markle has had to give up. Instead of ever rocking a fun mani, her nails will only be allowed to be painted a nude shade or soft pink.
The queen’s favorite nail polish color is “Ballet Slipper” by Essie, which many women in the royal family have worn on numerous occasions.
Short, sexy dresses
In her numerous red carpet appearances over the years, we’ve seen Markle wearing some seriously sexy numbers. She hasn’t been afraid of short hemlines and a bit of cleavage in the past, but now that she’s a royal, she’s left her more daring fashion sense behind.
The queen and Kate Middleton typically opt for below-the-knee dress lengths. While Markle has also followed suit, she has proven to still be in touch with her roots. When she and Prince Harry saw a performance of Hamilton in 2018, Markle wore an above-the-knee and pretty low cut tuxedo dress. So even though she’s conformed to a new royal style, she clearly isn’t afraid to break the rules now and again.
The queen doesn’t really have a problem with flat shoes. However, Markle has only donned sky-high heels since becoming a royal. As it turns out, there’s a specific reason for her fabulous choice in footwear.
According to celebrity photographer Glenn Gratton, Markle has been sticking to heels to make up for the height difference between herself and Harry. She’s only 5’6”, while her husband stands at 6’1”.
Gratton explained, “Couples with a big height difference look slightly unbalanced in pictures, and often the smaller of the two ends up looking even smaller and is constantly looking up at their partner.”
“In the case of Harry and Meghan she will be wearing high heels to maximise her height and shorten the gap if possible,” he continued. “Careful use of wardrobe choices will be important for Harry and Meghan to make sure the couples’ height difference is minimised.”
Remember when Harry and Markle debuted their relationship at the 2017 Invictus Games? Markle wore a crisp white button down, ripped jeans, and cute flat shoes. She’s probably happy she took the opportunity to dress casually in public once more while she still could, because now, the whole look would be a major no-no.
Royals have to be dressed elegantly in public at all times. Even on the few occasions we’ve seen Middleton step out in skinny pants and a more “dressed down” look, each ensemble was tailored to perfection.
