Meghan Markle Helped Prince Harry ‘Break Free’ of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Royal Expert Says

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex have seen their lives change drastically since 2018.

Harry and Meghan are no longer senior royals. However, Harry’s forged his own path separate from his brother and sister-in-law. That is, according to a royal expert, due in large part to Meghan.

Before finding a partner in Meghan, the Duke of Sussex, sixth in the royal family’s line of succession, carried out duties alongside his brother and sister-in-law. On many occasions, Harry stepped out with Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Laughing together and playful during official engagements, royal expert Katie Nicholl says Harry didn’t always enjoy being part of a trio.

“While the media loved this idea of a royal threesome – Kate, William and Harry – at points I’ve heard him complain that he felt the gooseberry, the third one along at the date,” Nicholl told Express

Nicholl also said the Duke of Sussex sometimes felt like a “spare wheel.” As a result, William and Catherine “went out of their way to make sure Harry felt part of this team, part of this trio.”

At one time, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Harry all lived close to each other in London and worked together.

“Everything from where they lived, a stone’s throw across the courtyard at Kensington Palace, to the Royal Foundation that was theirs, they very much tried to include him,” Nicholl said.

Meghan Markle’s helped Prince Harry strike out on his own, royal expert says

While taking part in official engagements with Catherine and William, Harry always wanted to do his own thing. According to Nicholl, Meghan is the “catalyst” that helped Harry do so.

“Harry always wanted to be his own person,” Nicholl said. “And I think Meghan has been the catalyst which has enabled Harry to break free from William and Kate.”

She continued, describing the three-person team as “at times cozy and convenient but” not “actually what Harry wanted.”

The Duke of Sussex “wanted to be his own person and I think Meghan really gave him the confidence to break free,” Nicholl added.

Nicholl continued, saying Harry has a vision for his royal path. And it doesn’t involve being linked to his brother and sister-in-law.

“Harry is a very, very focused man,” Nicholl said. “He has very clear ideas of what he wants to do and that wasn’t to be a spare wheel to William and Kate,” she added.

According to Nicholl, Meghan turned out to be just the thing Harry needed to forge his own path.

As of August 2020, Harry and Meghan are living in their new Santa Barbara, California, home. Plans to unveil Archewell, their charitable organization, are on hold. Meanwhile, the couple is adjusting to their new lives after stepping down as senior royals.
