If there is anyone on this planet who might be able to relate to what Meghan Markle is going through — it’s former First Lady Michelle Obama. When President Barack Obama decided to run for office in 2007–he was a relatively unknown senator and Mrs. Obama was a private citizen and mother of two young girls. The moment the Harvard alum’s candidacy was announced, Mrs. Obama’s life changed. She could no longer live her life quietly in Chicago. Instead, she was thrust onto the globe’s stage. From that moment on, everything from her figure to her speech to her style of dress was scrutinized to within an inch of its life. The racist trolls that came for her were also another thing she had to contend with.
Likewise, it looks like the Duchess of Sussex had no idea what she was in for. Though she was relatively well-known from her role on the mega-popular series Suits, marrying Prince Harry and entering the royal family as an American and a woman of color has been a whirlwind –and it hasn’t been easy.
Meghan Markle is struggling in the spotlight
Though she has handled her new title with poise and grace, Markle has not found it easy to deal with the politics of being a royal. The British tabloids have been especially vicious and racists, criticizing the former actress for literally breathing.
As a new mom and a newlywed, this has all taken its toll on Markle. In fact, in a new IGTV documentary, Harry And Meghan: An African Journey, the duchess got vulnerable revealing that she’s actually “not O.K.” in the wake of the relentless media storm. This revelation has caused a literal frenzy — especially after Prince Harry got candid about his strained relationship with his older brother, Prince William.
But could all of this have been prevented if Markle had listened to some advice given to her by Michelle Obama?
Michelle Obama’s advice to Meghan Markle
Michelle Obama and Meghan Markle have become good friends and according to a royal expert, the more seasoned public figure offered Markle some sound advice. A royal expert told Sky News,
Michelle Obama told the press she had a long talk with Meghan – they’d become friends – and she said to her, ‘for goodness’ sake, don’t do anything in the first year. Listen, take advice, take it easy.’
However, Markle is a go-getter and from the moment she and Prince Harry were engaged, she’s been super active in defining her new royal role and speaking out for herself. The expert explained,
Meghan said that she wants to get going straight away. I think that was a mistake – she hasn’t understood what it’s like being a member of the Royal Family. That is very important to her.”
Did Meghan Markle make a mistake by not heeding Michelle Obama’s advice?
We’re sure Markle respects Mrs. Obama and she listened to what she had to say. However, we’re also sure she never expected this amount of backlash and unfairness from the press.
It’s clear that the British Royal Family as a whole has welcomed Markle into the fold–but no one can prepare you for what living in a fishbowl will actually be like. Meghan’s former agent Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne told Express U.K– that Markle was naive about what she was getting into. She revealed,
I did speak to Meghan about the British media and it was clear that she didn’t know what she was letting herself in for. She was naive. This is the end of your normal life, the end of your privacy, everything.
Markle and Prince Harry have been married for just over a year, so this is all very new. Hopefully, with time, the public will adjust and the Sussexes can continue to do royal their way. We must remember that this isn’t an easy position for anyone. The late Princess Diana and Kate Middleton also suffered under the glare of the weight of the crown.
