Meghan Markle Included in ‘Suits’ Series Finale With Sweet and Funny References

Suits is officially over.

Gone are the days of Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty) and Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) performing their pre-trial can opener ritual (Spoiler! Fans learn the meaning behind the can opener in the finale.) and Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman) dictating his hilarious thoughts and talking about mudding.

While Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) left the legal drama at the end of Season 7 along with paralegal-turned-lawyer Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex) when they finally got married and moved to Seattle, Wash., Harvey, Donna, Louis and other supporting characters stuck around the fictional New York City law firm. Check out unseen pictures Adams shared on Instagram ahead of the finale, including some snaps of Markle.

But the series finale, Season 9, Episode 10: “One Last Con,” made nods to their longtime cast members, namely Markle, who left Suits in preparation for her life as a member of the British royal family.

‘Suits’ series finale makes references to Meghan Markle

Just because Markle didn’t return to Suits for the series finale — she’s been a little busy getting married to Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and adjusting to life as a royal and as a new mom — didn’t mean she was part of the show’s last episode. See the new parents with their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, here.

The writers made references to Rachel, and Markle by extension, as well as Prince Harry in the finale. But, some of the references were more subtle than others.

The first nod to Markle actually happened a few episodes earlier (Season 9, Episode 5: “If the Shoe Fits) when Adams returned to the show to face off against Harvey, his former mentor.

When his character, Mike, arrived at the firm, he’s asked about Rachel and how she’s doing since they moved to Seattle and started new jobs. Mike responded by making a joke for the audience who are well aware of her leaving the show to become a royal.

“If I told you how good, you probably wouldn’t believe me,” he said.

Writers for Suits included similar references in the series finale last night. The first came in a scene with Rachel’s father, fellow lawyer Robert Zane (Wendell Pierce), according to Glamour

A picture of Robert and Rachel sat on his desk in one scene, a nice little touch to the former cast member. Pierce recently recalled a memory from filming Suits with Markle where she almost wore a prop engagement ring in front of paparazzi. Thankfully, someone reminded her to remove it before facing the cameras.

The second came in the form of a brief (and funny) exchange between Louis and Harvey. Without giving too much away about the context of the conversation — we don’t want to ruin the finale for those who haven’t seen it yet — they were attending a fancy event that required more than their impeccably tailored suits for the office (pictured below).

Louis, being true to himself, showed up in a unique ensemble which Harvey promptly teased him about.

“Are you wearing a morning coat?” Harvey asked Louis who was wearing a top hat before adding, “You’re not the prince of England.”

We suspect this was another nod to Markle and her being married to a real prince.

And the third and final reference to Markle came at the end of series finale when Harvey flashed back through all the memories he had at the firm, including those with Rachel.

So long Suits, it’s been a good run. We’ll see you in reruns on USA Network.
