Meghan Markle is Getting More Politically Active Since Leaving Senior Royal Family Role
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex has been more involved in political endeavors as of late, a stark contrast from her time as a working member of the royal family. She recently participated in a virtual voter registration event with Michelle Obama, and it’s fair to assume she has more politically themed initiatives on her agenda.
Not long ago, Meghan was unable to participate in events such as these due to her connection to the royal family. However, since formally stepping down from her position alongside her husband, Prince Harry, earlier this year, she’s gotten back to her roots of social activism.
The royal family has traditionally avoided involvement in political affairs
Although Meghan was often vocal about issues such as women’s rights, Donald Trump’s presidency, and racism prior to entering her position in the royal family, she scaled back on her outspoken ways once she married Prince Harry. However, this wasn’t because she suddenly stopped caring about these issues but instead because royals have customarily chosen not to speak out on politics.
The royal family typically tries to stay out of politics due to its complex relationship with the United Kingdom. Earlier in history, when the monarchy had unchecked power, it could take whichever side it wanted on issues large and small. However, since the majority of political power now lies in the hands of an elected parliament, the royal family plays a more symbolic role of unity and keeps its position by staying in the good graces of the citizens.
To do this, the royals must not say or do things that would cause a divide among the United Kingdom’s diverse constituencies. This means not taking sides in controversial political issues is key to upholding their positions in society.
All of that being said, it’s pretty clear why Meghan hasn’t been speaking out as much on many political issues.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are adjusting to a new way of life
In the months leading up to their wedding and for a time after, Prince Harry and Meghan faced significant scrutiny from the media. The constant media attention began to weigh on Meghan, and the couple eventually decided it was time for a change.
In January, the couple announced they would be stepping back from their working roles in the royal family. They moved to Canada shortly afterward, and on April 1, they officially resigned from the royal family and stopped using their HRH titles.
Although there was a lot of speculation behind why Prince Harry and Meghan left the royal family, sources claimed they wanted a break from the media, more privacy to raise their son, and more control over their lifestyles. Harry and Meghan relocated to Southern California and bought a home in Santa Barbara.
Meghan Markle has been more vocal about social issues lately
Since formally stepping down from her role in the royal family, Meghan has been vocal on a number of social issues that have been in the news in recent months.
She made headlines earlier this year when she spoke out about the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. Addressing her former high school, she optimistically told the students they have an opportunity to be a “part of the rebuilding,” according to the Independent.
More recently, Meghan has been active with women’s rights and the electoral process. She made an appearance on Michelle Obama’s virtual voter registration event on Aug. 20. The livestreamed “couch party” commemorated the centennial of the 19th amendment and aimed to increase voter participation.
Although Meghan had taken a step back from political activism during her time as a working royal family member, it appears she’s committed to using her platform for more political endeavors in the future.
