Meghan Markle is proving that being a princess is anything but easy. In the past nine months alone, The Duchess of Sussex has faced truly heinous backlash from countless media outlets. Unreliable “sources” have done everything from fabricating a feud between her and Kate Middleton, to criticizing her for the way she chose to hold her adorable baby. Furthermore, countless news outlets have accused her of “diva-like” behavior.
Meghan Markle is constantly attacked in the news
Though Markle had her fair share of criticism to contend with before she married her husband, Prince Harry, the vitriol of hate has increased tenfold since she became a mother. But has the duchess truly changed for the worse, since she became a wife and a mother, or is she merely a victim of unfair media treatment?
Family and friends say the Duchess of Sussex hasn’t changed
To those who know Markle best, it would seem that she is still the same kind-hearted, intelligent, person she’s always been. In fact, Markle’s good friend, Priyanka Chopra, has expressed that she believes the negative publicity that the duchess receives is largely rooted in racism. Serena Williams, another famous friend of Markle’s, expressed that she doesn’t bother reading the negative publicity surrounding the new mom. However, the famous tennis player spoke very highly of her character following Markle’s wedding and Archie’s birth. “She couldn’t be a better friend to me. Low moments, high moments, she’s always there, and that’s all I want to be to her,” Williams gushed about the duchess.
But if Markle is such an incredible woman, why is it that the media is constantly tearing her down? The short answer is for the sake of a story. Unfortunately, we live in an age where positive news isn’t always as compelling to people as negative news. The media making someone a scapegoat is hardly anything new. Who could forget the heinous way the British Media often treated Princess Diana? As Markle is the newest member to marry into the royal family, she sadly has become the latest target.
The duchess is suing over a letter written to her dad
But Markle is no longer taking the criticism lying down. On Tuesday, Prince Harry released a public statement which informed the public that she would be taking legal actions against one of the British tabloids. The media company not only illegally published a private letter that Markle wrote to her estranged father, but also omitted large parts of it to serve their false narrative that sought to destroy Markle’s character.
Markle’s husband, Prince Harry, speaks out
In the statement, Prince Harry accused the British tabloids of countless false stories about Markle. “Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences – a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son,” the Duke of Sussex penned.
Prince Harry continued on to call out the sheer hypocrisy of the press and then affirmed that Markle is the same woman she’s always been. “The positive coverage of the past week from these same publications exposes the double standards of this specific press pack that has vilified her almost daily for the past nine months; they have been able to create lie after lie at her expense simply because she has not been visible while on maternity leave. She is the same woman she was a year ago on our wedding day, just as she is the same woman you’ve seen on this Africa tour,” he wrote passionately.
How being a mom has changed Meghan Markle
Of course, that last statement isn’t entirely accurate. Motherhood is sure to change a person is one way or another. But, if recent pictures, videos, and interviews are to be believed, it seems that Markle has only changed for the better. The Duchess of Sussex seems to be even more kind and gracious these days and more committed to impacting positive change across the world. Her royal tour in Africa made that perfectly clear. We hope that with the impending lawsuit, the media will ease up with their unfair attacks on her character.
