Is Meghan Markle Officially on Maternity Leave?

Meghan Markle has kept busy throughout her pregnancy with royal tours, engagements, meetings, and an extensive home renovation. At the start of her pregnancy, the Duchess of Sussex made it clear that she wants to remain as involved as possible throughout her pregnancy. Additionally, she planned to work up until her due date. But, now, her public appearances say otherwise. Is the Duchess of Sussex starting her maternity leave earlier than expected? Not exactly.

While it might seem like Meghan Markle’s maternity leave has begun, it’s actually quite the opposite. The Duchess of Sussex doesn’t have any public appearances on her calendar — and might not until after Baby Sussex is born — but that doesn’t mean she’s taking a break from her royal responsibilities. Instead, Meghan Markle has some private engagements and meetings on her calendar, so she hasn’t started her maternity leave just yet. “There are plenty of private meetings taking place,” a source confirmed to People. “If she is to do something public, it could be announced, but there are none that are scheduled,” they added.

The Duchess of Sussex allegedly met with two executives from The National Theatre (one of her patronages) at Kensington Palace on Wednesday and plans to continue to work behind the scenes until her baby’s spring arrival.

When is Meghan Markle’s due date?

Meghan Markle’s due date is unclear. The Palace’s original pregnancy announcement claimed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will welcome their firstborn in “spring 2019.” However, while on a royal engagement earlier this year, Meghan Markle revealed her due date is late-April.

That said, some believe the duchess might have shared the wrong due date to throw off royal baby watchers. Others think that Meghan Markle could give birth sooner than her shared due date, as the baby is already pretty big and the Duchess of Sussex has allegedly even had some false alarms.

If anything, Meghan Markle’s lack of public appearances could provide some insight into whether or not Her Royal Highness is due in March, April, or even May (as some also believe). Although she is still working, the Duchess of Sussex’s new schedule (and lack of publicity) indicates that she is preparing for motherhood and might have an earlier due date than expected.

Meghan Markle birth plan

The palace and Duke and Duchess of Sussex have yet to confirm Meghan Markle’s birth plan. However, rumor has it, Her Royal Highness is considering HypnoBirthing, the same natural birthing technique as Kate Middleton. The mother-to-be has reportedly received a few acupuncture treatments throughout her pregnancy and plans to continue until her due date.

Additionally, she could give birth at St. Mary’s Hospital Lindo Wing, like Kate Middleton, Princess Diana, and other royal women have before her. That said, some think she could opt for a home birth or welcome Baby Sussex at a hospital closer to her new home, Frogmore Cottage, in Windsor.
