Meghan Markle on How Men Should be Included in the Feminist Movement

Meghan Markle has made waves in the royal family since she first began dating Prince Harry. Coming from a Hollywood background, Markle does things a little differently than most royals. She’s particularly outspoken on the topic of feminism, for one.

On International Women’s Day, Markle spoke at a panel at King’s College London along with singer Annie Lennox and former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

In addition to speaking about how she handles the racist and sexist comments she receives online (she doesn’t read them), she spoke, of course, a great deal about feminism.

Markle, who is expected to give birth late April, touched on how she and Harry are excited to raise their child as a feminist (though maybe not gender fluid).

“I’ve actually been joking the past few weeks, I’d seen this documentary on Netflix about feminism and one of the things they said during pregnancy was ‘I feel the embryonic kicking of feminism.’ I love that. So boy or girl, whatever it is, we hope that that’s the case,” she said.

Meghan Markle thinks feminism should include men

Markle also talked a little bit about how men should, at the very least, be included in the dialogue that’s happening around the feminist movement right now.

“I think it would be impossible to not have boys especially as part of this conversation because picture how much courage it takes for a young girl in a small village, where most of the girls haven’t gone to school, and they’re reaching out, doing whatever they can, walking miles to be able to get an education.”

Markle thinks feminism can only be made stronger with the support of men. Why shouldn’t they be included?

She went on to talk about the importance of investing in our young women today in the hopes of creating the strong leaders of tomorrow.

“It’s not just about girls going to school and becoming smart girls, it’s knowing that those smart girls become influential women and that ends up changing the world for the better.”

She even brought Prince Harry into the conversation. According to Markle, he’s a proud feminist.

“There’s nothing threatening about a woman coming up to the same level, it’s our safety in numbers. Men are part of the conversation… my husband certainly is!”

This isn’t the first time Meghan Markle’s said that Prince Harry is a feminist

This isn’t the first time Markle’s talked about her husband’s feminist values. Last year, during an outing in Cardiff, Wales, Markle mentioned that her husband is a feminist.

According to People, a fan of the royal family, Jessica Phillips, told Markle that she thought it was “really  lovely to have a feminist in the royal family.” Markle responded: “[Harry’s] a feminist, too, so there’s that.”
