Meghan Markle likes to get an early start. That means she’s usually up before the sun is out. It has been reported that the duchess gets up at 4:30 a.m. every day. You probably can’t imagine getting up this early, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. Mornings are Markle’s favorite time of time of the day. She wrote on The Tig, her former lifestyle website, that mornings help set “the tone for our day ahead,” reports Refinery 29.

Why does Markle wake up at such an early hour? The duchess likes to rise early because she sets time aside in the morning for her yoga practice. It’s no surprise she makes this form of exercise a priority because her mother, Doria Ragland, is a yoga instructor. Markle says she first began practicing yoga with her mother when she was just 7 years old.

Another important part of Markle’s day is eating a healthy breakfast. Instead of reaching for a cup of coffee, she told Delish she usually drinks hot water with lemon. During a 2015 interview with The Chalkboard, Markle told the publication she prefers a Clean Cleanse vanilla shake with blueberries or an acai bowl with fresh berries, manuka honey and bee pollen. She says the acai bowl is her “absolute favorite.”

Green juice is another favorite of Markle’s. She told Today she likes to make her own juice each day:

For an easy pick me up, I always lean towards a juice—specifically a green juice. It’s easy to fall into the trap of rushing for a coffee when you hit that 4 p.m. slump, but if I blend some apple, kale, spinach, lemon and ginger in my Vitamix in the morning and bring it to work, I always find that sipping on that is a much better boost than a cup of espresso. Play with the recipe—toss in berries or use almond milk—at the end of the day, your body will thank you for nourishing it with so much fresh goodness.

Exercise isn’t he only activity Markle likes to do in the morning. She also reportedly carves out time to send emails so she can get a jump on her work day. Although it seems Markle is trying to be as productive as possible, a few outlets reported her work ethic ruffled some feathers. A royal insider told The Sun Markle often sends emails and texts to staff very early in the morning. The insider says Markle “has very high standards and is used to working in a Hollywood environment.”
