Did Meghan Markle Pay for her $600,000 Maternity Wardrobe?
Meghan Markle’s pregnancy is a lot more lavish than other royal women. From her $200,000 New York City baby shower to her $600,000 maternity wardrobe, it appears as though the Duchess of Sussex has gone all out. But, does Meghan Markle pay for her dresses, coats, sweaters, and other maternity items in her maternity wardrobe? Find out, ahead.
Meghan Markle’s maternity wardrobe
Throughout her pregnancy, Meghan Markle has wowed in dozens of maternity looks, some of which were more affordable than others. That said, according to a recent report from Love the Sales, the Duchess of Sussex’s entire maternity wardrobe — or, at least the 75 looks shown off in public — amounts to over half a million dollars.
Did Meghan Markle pay for her maternity wardrobe? Probably not in its entirety. According to Love the Sales, the Duchess of Sussex’s maternity wardrobe is worth over $600,000. And, while it’s likely that Her Royal Highness purchased some of the more affordable looks — like dresses from H&M and Aritzia — she probably didn’t fork over thousands of dollars on designers coats and dresses (including the $13,000 Oscar de la Renta dress she wore to the Geographic Society Awards in October 2018).
Do royals pay for their own clothes?
Meghan Markle didn’t receive any fashion allowance until she was officially married to Prince Harry. That means that the items she wore while accompanying her then fiancé on royal engagements were either paid for by the duchess or borrowed from designers.
Cosmopolitan reports that Meghan Markle might have even paid for the $75,000 Ralph and Russo gown she wore in her engagement photos. Although her net worth before joining the royal family was reportedly around $7 million and she could have afforded the dress, she also might have borrowed it for the photo opp. (We’re just being reasonable!)
According to Cosmopolitan, Meghan Markle can’t actually accept free gifts from designers and brands. However, she can request clothing. The Duchess of Sussex allegedly pays for what she keeps and sends back what she doesn’t. That said, the protocol might be different for award shows and galas like the Geographic Society Awards. Since royals typically wear high-end (aka, pricey) designers, they might take their dresses out on loan instead of paying the total cost.
What do royals do with their old clothes?
What will Meghan Markle do with her maternity wardrobe? It’s unclear. However, she might save some favorites for a future pregnancy and could even pass some items down to Kate Middleton (if she has a fourth baby) or Princess Eugenie. She could also take notes from Kate Middleton and give her mother, Doria Ragland some of her coats.
Additionally, Meghan Markle might save some of her more iconic looks and follow in Princess Diana’s footsteps with a charitable auction. Just months before she died, the late princess auctioned almost 80 dresses to AIDS and cancer causes. She raised $3.25 million.
