Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Just Put Their New Charity Archewell on Hold for the ‘Foreseeable Future’
When Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex left the British royal family after struggling in their roles as senior working royals, the pair hoped to get the ball rolling on their new venture immediately. However, world events have forced them to completely shift their course.
The duo left Vancouver Island in Canada for the duchess’ hometown of LA to hunker down amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Then, amid the global Stay-At-Home orders, several Black people were murdered at the hands of the police, launch a slew of protests and uprisings led by the Black Lives Matters movement.
Seeing the urgent inequities across the globe for Black people, other minorities, and the impoverished, the Sussexes have officially put their Archewell foundation on hold for the foreseeable future.

Though Megxit came as a surprise to many of us, the Sussexes had reportedly been discussing striking out on their own path since before they got married. “‘The seeds of Megxit were sown before they even got married,” an insider told The Sun. “The truth is that Harry had been deeply unhappy for a long time. And he and Meghan openly discussed going in a different direction well before they got married.”
Though LA was a surprising landing place for the pair, there was a reason why they chose Meghan’s hometown. In addition to having a supportive network including Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, Oprah Winfrey, and others, their massive team is also in Hollywood.
The Sussexes team includes an agent, business agent, lawyer, and PR firm. Nick Collins of the Gersh Agency, who has represented celebrities including Tobey Maguire and Jamie Foxx, is in charge of taking care of film, TV, or charity offers. Andrew Meyer, who runs Freemark Financial, is the mastermind behind Meghan’s business plans. Then the Sussexes’ lawyer Rick Genow, is a Harvard graduate. He considered one of the top attorneys in Hollywood, who will handle Meghan’s legal affairs. PR firm Sunshine Sachs is handling the couple’s publicity.

Though the Sussexes wanted to hold off on announcing Megxit, when the brand name leaked to the press, they came forward to explain their future endeavors.
“Like you, our focus is on supporting efforts to tackle the global COVID-19 pandemic but faced with this information coming to light, we felt compelled to share the story of how this came to be,” the Sussexes shared in a statement. “Before SussexRoyal, came the idea of ‘Arche’—the Greek word meaning ‘source of action.’ We connected to this concept for the charitable organization we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name. To do something of meaning, to do something that matters. Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon.”
Trademark paperwork from Archewell suggests that the brand could consist of everything from movies to podcasts, clothing to charitable services, and even online seminars, lectures, and retreats.

Though they had hoped to launch Archewell later this year, the Sussexes have put Archewell on hold for the foreseeable future. Amid current world events, the pair have decided to shift their focus. “[They’re] redirecting their efforts to the Black Lives Matter cause and the wider repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic,” a source told The Telegraph.
In fact, Archewell is not expected to launch until 2021. “What’s absolutely clear is that they want to get it right and there’s no point in rushing,” a source told The Daily Mail. “They are settling into a new life, a new era. This is about getting it right and making sure they are able to make the difference they want to make.”
