Why Prince Charles Thinks Meghan Markle Is Prince Harry’s ‘Backbone’
A lot has changed for Prince Harry since Meghan Markle came into his life. For one, the prince became a duke. Additionally, he now has his own royal household, is expecting his first child, has increased his royal duties, and is advocating for mental health in even bigger ways (see: his recent partnership with Oprah Winfrey). While the Duke of Sussex could have accomplished these things on his own, Prince Charles seems to believe it is Meghan Markle that gave him the backbone to enter this chapter of his life.
Prince Charles admires Meghan Markle’s strength
It’s no secret that Prince Charles and Meghan Markle have a close relationship. The Prince of Wales seems to adore his daughter-in-law and thinks she is tough as nails. In fact, her strength even inspired his nickname for the duchess.
According to the Daily Mail, Prince Charles calls Meghan Markle “Tungsten” after the “tough and unbending” metal. The pet name comes from his admiration for his daughter-in-law’s strength and the support she offers his “softy” son, Prince Harry.
“Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy,” an unidentified source explained to the Daily Mail. “It’s become a term of endearment,” they noted.
Here are some potential reasons why Prince Charles thinks Meghan Markle is Prince Harry’s backbone.
Meghan Markle isn’t afraid to speak up
Prince Harry is a royal rebel in his own right, but it’s Meghan Markle who pushes him to find his strength and stand his ground. The Duchess of Sussex is known for her independence, strength, and outspokenness — all of which makes her a true modern-day royal.
In a family that stays out of politics, the duchess has managed to insert herself in the middle of popular political topic — such as women’s rights — and make significant strides from within the royal family to bring attention to causes close to her and Prince Harry’s heart.
Her independence is a force to be reckoned with
Before meeting Prince Harry, Meghan Markle had a successful career, financial stability, and support system of friends that made cities like Toronto (where she once lived while filming Suits) home. She didn’t need a boyfriend, fiancé, or husband to lean on — she leaned on herself. Meghan Markle’s independence without a doubt helped shape her relationship with Prince Harry and made them a strong couple.
Prince Harry has spent his whole life connected to his family — specifically his brother, Prince William — without an identity of his own. With Meghan in his life, he has been able to see his own strengths and is making significant strides to carve out a unique place for himself within the royal family. As a result, the Duke of Sussex now has his own royal household and involves himself in several organizations and topics, separate from his brother.
She works hard
Another way Meghan Markle might have influenced her husband and become the backbone Prince Charles thinks she is? Through her work ethic. It’s no secret that the Duchess of Sussex works hard in everything she does. After all, she began her work with the royal family before her wedding to Prince Harry.
Since their engagement, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have covered a lot of ground together and continue to work hard for the causes and organizations they care about.
