Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Have This Ridiculous Rule for Their Neighbors

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are America’s fairy tale couple.  The pair seems to do everything perfectly, from their super stylish wedding to the naming of their firstborn, Archie.  Everything they do has purpose, symbolism, and class.

It seems like their drive for perfection may have gone too far, though.  Recent reports from their neighbors cast the couple in a less than positive light.

Tonight, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the first of a two game series of the Major League Baseball #LondonSeries, in support of @WeAreInvictusGames. Tonight’s highly anticipated game between the #Yankees and #RedSox took place at London stadium, Olympic Park. The @WeAreInvictusGames, of which His Royal Highness is Founding Patron, has been selected as charity partner for the @MLB 2019 series. The Invictus Games Foundation is the international charity that oversees the development of the Invictus Games, an international adaptive multi-sport event in which wounded, injured or sick armed service personnel and veterans participate. It celebrates the power of sport in recovery and how it can help, physically or psychologically, those suffering from injuries or illness. The word ‘invictus’ means ‘unconquered’ – it embodies the fighting spirit of the competitors. As part of the partnership, the Invictus Games Foundation have a team participating in London’s #Softball60, the social softball series built for the city and targeted to introduce the sport to new audiences and demonstrate that it is an inclusive sport. On this #ArmedForcesDay, tonight’s event was also a chance for Their Royal Highnesses to shine a light on the men and women here in the UK and around the world who have sacrificed so much for their country. Where do Prince Harry and Meghan Markle live?

The new family lives in Frogmore Cottage, on the Windsor estate.  Royal watchers will know that the queen is part of the Windsor family, so it makes sense that her grandson Prince Harry, and new great-grandson Archie would live on Windsor estate.

Even though the couple lives on the family estate, they’re not the only ones there.  They have neighbors, most of whom have served the royal family.  Prince Charles’ former nanny is among the 300 to 400 people who live on the estate, alongside the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

What is Frogmore cottage like?

Before Markle and Prince Harry decided to live there, Frogmore cottage was actually a five-unit home.  The cottage was used as housing for the royal staff, much like the rest of Windsor estate. The renovations included adding a yoga studio, a nursery, and a guest room for Markle’s mom.

The upgrades to Frogmore Cottage cost a pretty penny. Some of the approximately $2.5 million needed for the changes came from money given to the royal family by the British government, as part of the Sovereign Grant. Taxpayers didn’t foot the whole bill, however.  Any decor changes were paid for out of the couple’s own pocket.

What rules do Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have for their neighbors?

After the couple moved into Frogmore cottage, a royal handler held a meeting with residents to go over the rules for living near the newest royal couple. There was a long list of no-nos, but they all boil down to one thing: leave the duke and duchess alone.

The couple doesn’t want anyone approaching them on their walks with their dogs. They don’t want questions about Baby Archie, or offers to babysit him. They don’t want to be spoken to at all, and that includes leaving notes in their mailbox, or neighborly greetings. Even a simple ‘good morning’ is forbidden.

How do neighbors feel about the rules?

The Windsor estate residents are pretty offended by the whole ordeal.  They’re accustomed to living near royals, including the queen herself.  They’re used to being respectful, and discreet. It seems that when Queen Elizabeth is in town, neighbors are allowed to exchange pleasantries with the monarch if the situation is appropriate.  Many of the neighbors have even had tea with the queen.

It’s possible that these rules aren’t coming from the couple themselves.  They didn’t deliver the message to neighbors in person, so it could be that an overzealous palace official got carried away.

Prince Harry and Markle are private people. That’s part of what makes them so relatable. They’re just normal people, trying to live a normal life.  Who could blame them for wanting to keep their private life private, especially now that Baby Archie is here. Even though it’s possible they didn’t make these rules themselves, their fans won’t blame them for wanting to keep their private life private.
