Though they are currently on hiatus from their royal duties until the new year — things haven’t exactly been restful for Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle. The Sussexes have been struggling as a modern couple trying to navigate the royal world while remaining true to themselves.
Things have gotten so bad that they’ve found themselves isolated from the rest of the British Royal Family. Though the pair seemed to be taking everything as it came — in October 2019 they revealed in their ITV documentary — Harry and Meghan: An African Journey — just how awful things have been.
The Sussexes’ hiatus has been an opportunity for them to step back, relax, and reevaluate their approach. Unfortunately, they just got some bad news.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s private secretary just quit
Amid their hiatus — the duke and duchess’ private secretary Samantha Cohen just resigned. Prior to becoming the Sussexes private secretary — Cohen worked for Queen Elizabeth II for many years. Cohen has been with the Sussexes since their wedding in May 2018. Therefore, her resignation will certainly shift the duke and duchess’ staff in a major way.
Kensington Palace announced the news of Cohen’s departure in a statement saying, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex this afternoon received Ms. Samantha Cohen upon relinquishing her appointment as Private Secretary to Their Royal Highnesses.”
Inside a royal private secretary’s duties
According to Royal U.K., a royal private secretary is intricately involved with helping a royal (or royals) carry out their duties. The private secretary acts as the liaison between the royals, other royal households, and the various Commonwealth governments.
They are intricately involved with the royal’s schedules, the press, and the royal’s daily life. The royal private secretaries have considerable influence since they set the tone for the royals –drafting speeching and advising on various approaches.
This is the reason Duchess Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s private secretary quit
Samantha Cohen has been working with the British Royal Family since 2001 — therefore she knows the ends and outs, the traditions and the family members very well. In fact just before she joined the Sussexes team — Cohen was planning on resigning from her role in the royal family. She was only set to work with the duke and duchess for a few months.
However, after a whirlwind wedding, a new baby and considerable adjustment in their new roles — Cohen extended her stay with the Suessexes several times. That ended when Prince Harry and Markle hired Fiona Mcilwham to take Cohen’s place in October 2019.
Cohen left the royal family for a very cool opportunity. According to Daily Mail, “[Cohen] has taken a job with Cool Earth, an organization that aims to halt tropical deforestation.” The former long-time royal staffer will continue to brush shoulders with the royals.
“One of its partners is the Royal Commonwealth Society, so Sam and her former employers could be rubbing shoulders again in the not-too-distant future,” Daily Mail said. Perhaps the duke and duchess’ new hire will help them find their stride in the royal family.
