From welcoming a new baby to finishing their first year as a married couple, it’s been an exciting year for Duchess Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. The Sussexes have been trying to find their stride as senior members of the British Royal Family which staying true to themselves.
Unfortunately, it hasn’t all been easy — especially for Markle. Though she’s done her best to live up to her new role with dignity and grace, the British press and public have made it rather difficult for Markle to navigate royal life. She’s been accused of everything from photoshopping her 2019 holiday card to feuding with Duchess Kate Middleton.
Now, the royal couple is taking a much-needed break in Canada where they have been spotted hiking, jogging, and taking in the stunning sites.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been spending time on Vancouver Island
Canada is a part of the British Commonwealth, but it’s always had an extra special spot in the Sussexes hearts. When the duke and duchess met, Markle was filming her hit drama series, Suits in Toronto and they were able to keep their romance low-key when the prince visited her while they were dating.
Therefore, for their six-week hiatus to regroup and spend time with their son, the Sussexes chose to return to their old stomping grounds. “As has been reported, Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are spending private time in Canada,” a royal spokesperson confirmed to Royal reporter Omid Scobie. “The decision to base themselves in Canada reflects the importance of this Commonwealth country to them both. Whilst this emails confirms the country they are taking their family time in, for security reasons we will not be releasing any further details and request that their privacy is respected.”
This is how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been spending their vacation
In addition to their holiday festivities and spending time with Baby Archie — the duke and duchess have been spotted on the ultra-quiet and ultra-private — Vancouver Island. The pair have been spotted dining at Deep Cove Chalet and jogging.
“Horth Hill’s become a very popular place now. And they jog around, so they’ve been seen,” Deep Cove Chalet co-owner Bev Koffel said. “It’s kind of exciting. I hope everything goes fine for them. They’re breaking away from tradition and I just wish them all the best.”
There is no word yet on the Sussexes other activities on the island, but it looks like they are getting the quality time they deserve. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomed the pair to Canada saying, “Prince Harry, Meghan, and Archie, we’re all wishing you a quiet and blessed stay in Canada,” he tweeted. “You’re among friends, and always welcome here.”
Inside Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s New Year’s plans
Markle and Prince Harry have no plans to return to the U.K. before 2020 — in fact, their New Year’s Eve will be super lowkey. Though Buckingham Palace hasn’t announced any formal plans that the Sussexes might have — it appears they will be spent on Vancouver Island.
However, when they do return to their royal duties, we expect Markle and Prince Harry might have a brand new strategy for approaching royal life.
