Meghan Markle Says Her Wedding to Prince Harry Was Worth $1 Billion for the U.K.

During Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry‘s time in the British royal family, they remained a constant subject in the tabloids and newspapers. The U.K. press and public were fascinated by the American-born actor, so they were determined to dig up any information they could about her past life.

Since Meghan was not used to the spotlight in this manner, she became an easy target for false rumors and explosive exposes. From scrutinizing her personality and her wardrobe choices to digging up information on her family, nothing about the duchess’ life was left unturned.

It seemed from the outside looking in that the press was determined to villainize Meghan, and one way they did that was to paint the self-made millionaire as a gold digger. However, in new court documents, the duchess is saying the U.K. profited off of her wedding day.

The Sussexes tired the knot on May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in front of 800 guests. hey also had a private reception that evening. It was not a cheap affair. At $420,000 — Meghan’s wedding gown is estimated to be the most expensive ever worn by a royal bride. Catering costs, music, flowers, and even stationery were also expensive.

However, the couple’s extensive security which included snipers, undercover police, military tech, and drones are what truly ate up a great deal of the budget.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s lavish spending concerned the royal family

Though the royal family and U.K. taxpayers seemed happy to cover the majority of the royal wedding cost, it is now being reported that Queen Elizabeth was increasingly concerned with the couple’s spending.

In their book, Royals at War,  Dylan Howard, and Andy Tillett write that the queen was privately unhappy about the $3 million spent to renovate the couple’s home Frogmore cottage. She also raised her eyebrows a the duchess $400,000 maternity wardrobe and the extensive amounts of money the Sussexes’ spent on wellness.

“Harry’s [spending] transformation is revealed as one of the fundamental factors behind the deep fissure that opened between him and his brother, Prince William,” the book states. “The fact that Meghan splashed so much cash rang alarm bells with the traditionally conservative Queen Elizabeth.”

Meghan Markle says the U.K. earned $1 billion for her wedding

One of the deciding factors for Megxit was that the Sussexes were determined to be financially independent. They are also paying taxpayers back for the money spent renovating Frogmore, as well as rent for their property to the tune of $22,000 each month.

According to Meghan, it was insulting for the royals to comb over their financials especially since their wedding alone allegedly brought in over $1 billion in tourism.

According to Express, in court documents from the duchess’ case against Associated Newspapers Limited, “the wedding brought in £700 million in business spending and an additional £300 million in public relations value. The couple also claims that the cost to the taxpayer was low because Prince Charles took on most of the costs himself.”

Associated Newspapers counterclaim in Meghan’s privacy claim was that the Sussexes could be scrutinized because they were publically funded. Meghan and her lawyers are arguing that the economic benefits to Britain far outweighed the costs to the taxpayers.
