Meghan Markle Received Sad Advice After Her Royal Wedding to Prince Harry
It’s been three years since Meghan, Duchess of Sussex walked down the aisle at St. George’s Chapel to marry Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. But only in 2021 did the world learn the heartbreaking advice the former Suits star received upon joining the British royal family.
After Oprah With Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special aired, Oprah shared what the Duchess of Sussex had been told following her royal wedding to Harry.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal wedding took place in May 2018
Millions of people around the world watched as the couple exchanged vows during a televised ceremony on May 19, 2018. There to witness it in-person were a number of celebrities.
Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding guest list included the bride’s former Suits co-stars as well as George and Amal Clooney, Oprah, Elton John, and David and Victoria Beckham. Also there for the ceremony were, of course, members of the royal family including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and more.
Meghan memorably walked herself halfway down the aisle before being escorted by Prince Charles the rest of the way. She met Harry at the altar where they exchanged a few words.
Upon walking out of the chapel as husband and wife, Meghan and Harry shared their first kiss as newlyweds. They proceeded to have a carriage ride followed by an exclusive wedding reception at Frogmore House.
Meghan Markle received advice to be less herself, according to Oprah
While Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding gave off fairytale vibes it wasn’t the start of a perfect royal life. Appearing on CBS This Morning on March 8, 2021, the day after her interview with Meghan and Harry aired, Oprah recalled a conversation she had with the Duchess of Sussex in 2018.
The Me You Can’t See host recalled Meghan telling her the “disheartening” advice she received after officially becoming a member of the royal family.
“She had just joined the royal family and she shared a conversation with me then that made me feel somewhat disheartened,” Oprah said, according to E!. “She said she had been told, been given advice, that it would be best if she could be 50% less than she was. That was the quote, if she could be 50% less.”
Oprah continued, sharing how she replied: “I remember hearing that in 2018 and I said to her, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to survive, being half of yourself.’”
Prince Harry says he and Meghan Markle feel more ‘free’ in California
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to Meghan’s home state of California after stepping down as senior royals. They bought a $14.7 million mansion in Montecito where they currently live with their 2-year-old son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
During a May 2021 appearance on Armchair Expert, Harry described feeling “free” in the wake of the move, adding that it’s made a difference for both him and Meghan.
“Here, I can actually lift my head and I feel different,” he said. “My shoulders have dropped, so has hers. You walk around feeling a little bit more free. I get to take Archie on the back of my bicycle. I never had the chance to do that.”
