Meghan Markle’s Remembrance Day Coat Is Getting Major Backlash
It looks like Meghan Markle can’t catch a break these days. The Duchess of Sussex has been bullied and tormented in the spotlight from the moment she and Prince Harry announced their engagement. Markle had tried to do royal life, “her way” –but the British press and public certainly aren’t making it easy on the former actress.
In early October 2019 — Markle got very vulnerable in a revealing ITV documentary, Harry and Meghan: An African Journey. The intent was for the duchess to connect with the public while sharing how difficult it’s been to maintain a sense of self with the constant harassment. Unfortunately, the documentary backfired.
Now, it seems that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are changing their strategy. They are retreating from the public in some ways, but that hasn’t stopped the recent criticism of an item of clothing that the Suits alum wore to Remembrance Day 2019.
What is Remembrance Day?
Just like Memorial Day in the United States, in the U.K., people pay homage to soldiers who have lost their lives in the wars with Remembrance Day. It marks the day World War One ended, at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918. Each year, members of the British Royal Family pay their respects by attending the formal festivities and dressing in all black.
Inside Meghan Markle’s Remembrance Day 2019 look
Markle appeared with her husband, Prince Harry, and her in-laws at Remembrance Day. The Duchess of Sussex stood with the family in a gorgeous fitted back coat and a broad-brimmed hat. She looked both somber and elegant for the occasion. However, her look — through no fault of her own, unwittingly strummed up a major controversy on the internet.
This is why Meghan Markle’s Remembrance Day coat is getting major backlash
When Markle was spotted wearing the £1,545 fitted coat from Stella McCartney as she stood overlooking the Cenotaph in Whitehall for the ceremony, most royal fans thought nothing of it. However, several hours later, things got prickly. McCartney took to social media to share a snap of Markle wearing her coat. She also said she felt “honoured” to have dressed the duchess for the occasion. She said, “So honoured to have HRH Duchess of Sussex in our Autumn ‘19 coat at Remembrance Day service. x Stella #RemembranceDay.”
Royal fans quickly clapped back, calling the move “tacky” and saying that McCarthey should be ashamed for advertising her clothing during such a sensitive event. Users have asked the renowned designer to take the post down. One user asked, “Stella, don’t you think it’s disrespectful plugging your fashion wear on Meghan when she was paying respect to our fallen soldiers?” McCartney has taken the tone-deaf post down.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s appearance at Remembrance Day was very awkward
In addition to the coat debacle –Remembrance Day was the first time Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had seen Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton since the younger prince came clean about his strained relationship with his brother in Harry and Meghan: An African Journey. Body-language expert Blanca Cobb told Cosmopolitan,
Harry’s hand over his stomach is a self-soothing gesture. It’s a go-to for him, and a protective gesture that helps comfort him in stressful situations. [Meghan’s] hands are in an awkward position, which signals that there’s a little bit of unease for her. They’re both showing some discomfort.
Yikes, we hope the royal siblings can work through their issues.
