How Did Meghan Markle Meet Serena Williams?
The Duchess of Sussex has a lot of high profile friends — some of which she met long before meeting and marrying her Prince Charming. Case in point: She and Serena Williams have been friends since 2014. But, how did Meghan Markle meet Serena Williams? Up ahead, we take a closer look at their friendship, including how they met and what Meghan Markle has to say about her tennis star best friend.
How did Meghan Markle meet Serena Williams?
Meghan Markle and Serena Williams’ friendship goes way back to February 2014. The two participated in DirectTV’s Celebrity Beach Bowl together and teamed up for a flag football match. According to the duchess, they were friends at first site. “We hit it off immediately, taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing in, and chatting not about tennis or acting, but about all the good old fashioned girly stuff,” Meghan once wrote on her former lifestyle blog, The Tig. “So began our friendship,” she added.
Inside Meghan Markle and Serena William’s Relationship
Since the early days of their friendship, Meghan Markle and Serena Williams remained close. Meghan was even seen supporting Serena months after meeting for the first time at the U.S. Open championship, where Serena won the title for the third consecutive time. Like any good bestie would do, Meghan took to her (now remove) Instagram account to share a photo taken from the stands. The then actress captioned the image with “She did it! @serenawilliams! #bravo #friends #usopen.”
That wouldn’t be the last time the two supported each other in their careers (and lives). Keep reading for a closer look at Meghan Markle and Serena Williams’ relationship.
They root for each other
Like most best friends, Meghan and Serena root for each other from the sidelines — literally and figuratively. Meghan Markle has shown up for several of Serena Williams’ matches and, when she couldn’t make it, she has posted her support via social media. While she no longer has social media accounts (blame the queen’s royal rulebook), the duchess likely still watches her bestie on TV and in person at Wimbledon.
In addition to watching her tennis matches, Meghan Markle has also supported Serena’s other endeavors, including her fashion collections. In 2016, Meghan Markle showed up for Serena Williams’ fashion show at New York Fashion Week. “My eyes are closed but my heart is so open!” She captioned a photo of the two best friends (one that her eyes do appear to be closed in). “So proud of your new collection @serenawilliams. Happy I could be there to support you xx #NYFW,” she concluded.
Serena also supports her bestie — especially when it came to her former lifestyle blog, The Tig. The tennis pro even contributed several times to the blog before the duchess took the website down.
Meghan says Serena is her ‘confidante’
When you’re royalty, it’s important to have friends that you can trust — ones that won’t use you for your status (although Serena definitely doesn’t need to use Meghan for her status). Serena Williams has been an ultra-close friend of Meghan’s since the very beginning of their relationship and, as it turns out, she is one of the few Meghan trusts the most. The duchess once took to her lifestyle blog to gush about her friendship with the tennis pro, stating: “She quickly became a confidante I would text when I was traveling, the friend I would rally around for her tennis matches, and the down to earth chick I was able to grab lunch with just a couple weeks ago in Toronto.”
Serena watched Meghan walk down the aisle
For her royal wedding, Meghan Markle decided to opt out of a bridesmaid, since she was only allowed one. However, that didn’t stop her from honoring her closest friends with an invite to the most anticipated event of the year. On the day of her wedding, Serena was in the audience and watched as her best friend walked down the aisle and became a wife and duchess. She later celebrated with Meghan at her exclusive afternoon reception and even more exclusive evening party.
They are still super close
Despite Meghan Markle’s new life as a royal, she still keeps in touch with her best friend. As a new(wish) mom herself, Serena is likely one of the women giving the mother-to-be parenting advice. There’s also a chance Serena Williams will be one of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby’s godparents. Royals don’t typically name their siblings as guardians and instead look to their closest friends.
