Meghan Markle said few people had checked in on her

During the 2019 ITV documentary, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Meghan told journalist Tom Bradby how much pain she’d endured because of the constant scrutiny.

“Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging,” she said.

At the time of the interview, she, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and their young son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, were wrapping up a royal tour with engagements in South Africa.

“Then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot,” she said. “So, you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed.”

Meghan continued: “It’s um . . . yeah. I guess, also thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m OK, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”

When Bradby asked if it was a fair assessment to say she wasn’t doing OK, the Duchess of Sussex said “Yes.”

She called it a ‘moment of vulnerability’

On an Oct. 10, 2020 episode of the podcast Teenage Therapy, Meghan and Harry sat down to discuss mental health in honor of World Mental Health Day. The Duchess of Sussex reflected on the ITV interview, describing her mental state at the time.

She’d been breastfeeding Archie in between royal engagements and said she’d felt “exhausted” from the parenting duties and the tour overall.

“I didn’t think about that answer,” she said. “I just answered honestly because I was in a moment of vulnerability because I was tired. Because there was no presentation it was just, ‘Here’s where I am. I’m a mom who’s with a four-and-a-half-month-old baby and we are tired.”’

“I didn’t realize that my answer would receive such an interest from around the world,” she added.

As to why her comment got so much attention?

“The reason it resonated with people is because everyone wants to be asked if they’re OK,” she said. “Across the world, there was a ripple of ‘Yes, ask me if I’m OK.’”

Meghan Markle says she’s ‘doing well’ now

When the podcast hosts asked Meghan and Harry how they were doing, the Duchess of Sussex said her life is good.

“Ayear later I would say, Yes I’m doing well,” Meghan said. “The past few months have been layered for everyone. We certainly can’t complain. We are fortunate we all have our health we have roofs over our heads.”

She and Harry stepped down as senior royals at the end of March 2020 before buying a $14.7 million mansion in Montecito, California. In September 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced a major Netflix deal to produce programming for the streamer.
