Meghan Markle’s Father Thomas Reveals Why His Relationship With the Royal Family Is On the Rocks
Meghan Markle’s family drama continues: her sort-of estranged father, Thomas Markle, has now declared he plans to visit London to reconcile with his daughter — whether he’s welcome or not.
This isn’t the first time the patriarch of the Markle family has garnered media attention for outlandish comments. He couldn’t attend her wedding due to health complications after grappling with whether or not he’d make an appearance. He allegedly staged paparazzi photos to boost his image. And, most recently, he criticized the queen for meeting with President Donald Trump.
On July 15, Thomas granted The Sun with an exclusive interview where he continued to question the royal family’s motives along with his daughter’s happiness.
He believes Meghan is ‘terrified’ by her new life
Thomas first called the royal family “outdated” before disclosing why he thinks his daughter, the Duchess of Sussex, is “terrified.”
“I see it in her eyes, I see it in her face and I see it in her smile. I’ve seen her smile for years, I know her smile. I don’t like the one I’m seeing now.” He admitted Meghan might just be “having a couple of bad days,” or be cracking under the pressure due to what he called the “high price” of being around the royal family.
However, Meghan’s actions indicate she’s anything but unhappy. Following her wedding day, the new Duchess of Sussex attended her father-in-law Prince Charles’ 70th birthday, went on her first engagement with Queen Elizabeth II, and was spotted smiling and supporting friend Serena Williams at Wimbledon alongside her new sister-in-law, Kate Middleton.
He hasn’t talked to his daughter since her wedding day
While Thomas was judging his daughter’s facial expressions (and the alleged pain behind them), he made a telling admittance in his interview: he hasn’t spoken to Meghan since the day after she married Prince Harry. However, he blamed the royal family for the two-month silence between him and his daughter.
“I spoke to Meghan and Harry briefly after the wedding,” he said, adding that “the phone number I had been calling Meghan on is no longer picking up. And I don’t have an address for her.” He also said that while he’s reached royal correspondents, none have called him back.
He said he plans to travel to London
Whether he’s invited or not. “If I had one message for her, it would be that I’m sorry for anything that went wrong,” Thomas said in his recent interview. The Palace hasn’t officially responded … and Thomas doubts they will. He finished his interview by disclosing he plans to fly to London to try and make amends with Meghan.
“If I chose in a month, or couple of months, to go to England — I want to see my daughter. I’m thinking about it,” he said. “I don’t care whether she is pissed off at me or not … I’m not going to wave flags and make a fool of myself. I’d find a hotel room and try to reach them.”
While we’re all for families amending broken (or, in this case, perhaps just bruised) relationships, we hope for Meghan’s sake (and stress level!) that Thomas has good intentions — and isn’t just looking for another photo op.
