During the opening segment, the topic of Donald Trump came up. The group discussed Trump’s 2020 bid for re-election. One common statement among the hosts was that Trump seems to say the same things over and over again. His speech included promises to build the border wall and make the United States a better country. Behar expressed annoyance, saying Trump was “like a jukebox” because his speech hasn’t changed since his last election bid. Host Sunny Hostin said she thought she was watching a re-run at first.

Then Meghan McCain spoke up, saying she only watched Trump’s speech because it aired after the Housewives reality show. She said it was hard to watch Trump’s speech because Sen. Lindsey Graham was at the Orlando campaign rally. McCain noted how enthusiastic the crowd at the rally was. She also mentioned a conversation she had with a producer who was confused about why Trump’s supporters love him so much. “It’s not just they love Trump so much,” said McCain. “They hate the same things Trump hates, that’s what’s going on,” she explained. Behar was upset by McCain’s comment and jumped in to speak her mind. She asked McCain to clarify what Trump and his supporters both hate, and then things started to spin out of control.

McCain didn’t like being questioned by Behar and was bothered that she couldn’t express her opinion on Trump without being interrupted. “I come here every day open-minded trying to explain it, and it’s not a fun job for me,” McCain said. “I know you’re angry Trump is president.” Behar agreed she was angry and McCain told the host to stop lashing out at her because of her Trump anger.

Things got tense after McCain said to Behar, “I don’t think yelling at me is going to fix the problem. I just said that it was hard for me to watch this. I just said it was hard for me to watch Lindsey Graham, who I considered an uncle for a long time, okay?” McCain continued her speech, saying she felt like people gang up on her and punish her for her political affiliation, and she’s the “sacrificial Republican every day.”

Whoopi Goldberg had to step in and break up the exchange

As things escalated, Whoopi Goldberg had to get involved. She jumped in and tried to calm the hosts down. Fortunately, it was time for a commercial break. After the break, McCain said all the hosts were friendly off camera and that she just enjoys having a heated debate, specifically with Behar. Although McCain and Behar tried to make up for the sake of the cameras, it was evident their spat wasn’t resolved, as McCain took another dig at Behar in another segment.
