‘Midsommar’ Star Jack Reynor Joins ‘Peripheral,’ Plus Everything We Know So Far
Jack Reynor — mostly known for his leading role in Midsommar — joins previously announced castmembers Chloë Grace Moretz and Gary Carr (Death in Paradise, Bolden) in the upcoming Amazon original series Peripheral, according to Deadline. Reynor has also starred in Sing Street, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Kin, and What Richard Did.
Peripheral, based on William Gibson’s best-selling novel of the same name, is a science fiction thriller described as a “hallucinatory glimpse into the fate of mankind.” And, just in case that’s a bit too abstract and intangible, let’s break down the story’s basic premise.
What is ‘Peripheral’ about?
Reynor will play Burton — a United States Marine Corps veteran hired for a security job in cyberspace. One day, he asks his sister Flynne (Moretz) to fill in for him at work, and she winds up witnessing what she presumes to be a real-life murder through the supposedly virtual game world she is monitoring.
Flynne can’t decide if what she has witnessed is real or part of a game, as the setting looks just like London, but more futuristic. This sets the groundwork for an epic sci-fi tale that spans present and future timelines. Gary Carr will portray Wilf Netherton — a publicist living in the 22nd century — 70 years after Flynne and Burton’s time.
Who is behind the Amazon original ‘Peripheral?’
Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios are co-producing Peripheral, in association with Kilter Films. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Kilter own Kilter films, and they are the same duo well-known for their work on Westworld — the HBO sci-fi tale that premiered in 2016. Scott B. Smith is the creator of the production, and he is an author and screenwriter recognized for The Burnt Orange Heresy, Siberia, The Ruins, A Simple Plan, and more.
Nolan and Kilter are joined by creator Scott. B Smith, Vincenzo Natali, Nolan and Joy, Athena Wickham, and Steven Hoban as producers. Greg Plageman is executive producing and serving as showrunner.
Natali will also serve as the series primary director. Natali has worked on a handful of productions within the sci-fi and horror genres, notably directing Splice, Cube, In the Tall Grass, and Cypher.
From the strength of the novel itself to those who have teamed up to turn the source material into a TV show, Peripheral is built to succeed. Now, we just wait and hope for the best.
