Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s relationship seems too good to be true. The two met on the set of the hit sitcom That 70’s Show where their characters’ relationship was as young and hopeful as their own off-screen flirtations. After years of dating other people, the two rekindled, got engaged, and had two children.
Kunis recently revealed her dating history before Kutcher, including her views on love and the mistakes she made.
She said she was to blame for a bad breakup
In the early 2000s, Kunis was part of an “it” couple — but it wasn’t with Kutcher. She dated Home Alone actor Macaulay Culkin from 2002 to 2010 before ending things in a very public and messy breakup. “I f—ed up,” Kunis told Dax Sheppard on his podcast Armchair Expert, calling it a “horrible, horrible breakup.”
While at the time the actors’ reps called the breakup “amicable,” Kunis revealed it was anything but. “I was an a– in my 20s,” she told Sheppard, “I’ll be the first to admit it. And that’s something took me a long time to come out and be like, ‘Yeah, you know what, I was a d—,’ and accept it and I own it now.”
Kunis admitted to doing something “horrible” to Culkin and used her time being single to explore who she was — and why she did it. “I genuinely need to know why I did what I did, and, like, regroup myself as a human being,” she explained.
Blind dates can lead to relationships — in ways you wouldn’t expect
While initially there was nothing romantic between the two costars, Kunis admitted that remaining friends with Kutcher was eventually what led them to date. While Kutcher was Kunis’ first kiss (on-screen, but still, that’s cute), off-screen the two were pursuing other relationships. While Kunis dated Culkin, Kutcher began dating actress Demi Moore. The two married in 2005, split in 2011, and were divorced a year later.
Through the ups and downs of their previous relationships, Kunis and Kutcher remained friends. After reuniting at the 2012 Golden Globes, Kutcher made a move — but not the one fans expected. Rather than pursue his chemistry with Kunis, Kutcher set his old friend up on a blind date.

They kept their relationship to themselves initially
After the blind-date-gone-wrong (or right?) Kutcher and Kunis kept their relationship under wraps. “People will fill in the blanks however they want,” Kutcher told Elle. Kunis also explained how rumors got out of hand while the two stayed silent.
“He was coming off a divorce … But I think there was a lot of misconceptions about the divorce. And because he’s very private and respectful he wasn’t going to go and say anything. So, he kind of just let rumors be rumors. And so people believed rumors….He ate it. So people had a weird perception of who he was based on rumors that he didn’t correct,” she explained.
And focused on being honest with each other
The two made honestly their best policy from the start. They dated with no intention of getting married and just seeing where things went. Eventually, the two decided they did want to get married and talked openly about it.
“We went into this relationship super transparent with one another,” she said. “So we knew 100% each other’s faults. We knew exactly who we were. We knew exactly who we used to be. Everything. And we were like I accept you for you are.”
