Why Wasn’t Miley Cyrus at the 2020 Grammy Awards?
The Grammy Awards ceremony in 2020 was a memorable one for all involved. However, many of the night’s nominees, including Taylor Swift, did not attend. And Miley Cyrus, another big name in music, also wasn’t there. Was she invited? Here’s what we know.
Miley Cyrus did not attend the Grammy Awards
Despite her presence in the music industry, Cyrus stayed home this year. She didn’t have any nominations — in fact, she’s been nominated just once, for Best Pop Vocal Album for Bangerz (more on that album to come). However, she did comment on awards show after the fact.
Cyrus’ father, Billy Ray Cyrus, was nominated for the first time this century. Along with Lil Nas X, he was up for Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Music Video for “Old Town Road.” And after winning the latter two, his daughter took to social media to congratulate him.
Who was there for Billy Ray Cyrus’ big win and performance?
In addition to their two wins (which were presented at the Premiere Ceremony prior to the live telecast), Billy Ray Cyrus and Lil Nas X also performed “Old Town Road.” Along with a tribute to Kobe Bryant, the performance included BTS, Diplo, Mason Ramsey, and Nas. It was one of the best of the night.
So who was there to support Billy Ray Cyrus? His wife and mother of their many children, Tish Cyrus, came along. And his daughter, Noah Cyrus, a singer-songwriter in her own right, was also by his side. She later attended an after party. But her older sister Miley wasn’t there, either.
She has a history with award shows
Cyrus has been performing at awards shows for many years. However, things changed drastically for her in 2013. That was the year Bangerz was released, and when she performed with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards. Her twerking in a barely-there costume was just one detail that stuck with audiences in the aftermath.
The reaction to this performance was strong, to say the least. She also smoked weed on stage at the European Music Awards (above). But the controversy eventually subsided. Cyrus went on to host the VMAs in 2015, which is when she and Nicki Minaj had an awkward moment.
Was Miley Cyrus banned from the Grammys?
In the caption for the video from the 2013 EMAs, Cyrus wrote, “And we wonder why I’m not invited to award shows anymore.” She posted this the day after the 2020 Grammys. While some may have taken that to mean that Cyrus is banned from these kinds of events, that’s definitely not the case.
In fact, Cyrus attended the Grammys just last year. She performed twice — once with Shawn Mendes and once with her godmother, Dolly Parton. And since then, she returned to the VMAs stage, singing her post-Liam Hemsworth breakup song “Slide Away.” So who knows? Maybe, if her 2020 album finally arrives, we’ll be seeing Cyrus at the 2021 Grammys as a nominee.
