Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s Relationship Timeline
No matter how many times Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have broken up and gotten back together over the years, they’re still one of Hollywood’s favorite love stories. They’ve basically endured everything you can as a couple, and seem to have come out stronger every time.
Here’s a comprehensive timeline of the most significant moments in Cyrus and Hemsworth’s relationship, leading up to their most recent breakup rumors.
Where it all began. Cyrus and Hemsworth were brought together by fate on set for The Last Song (2010), a fan-favorite Nicholas Sparks adaptation. In the movie, they play a young couple who falls in love, but fiction quickly turned to reality for the two.
They made themselves red-carpet official. They debuted their relationship at an Oscars event — the first of many red carpets they’d be photographed on together.
August 2010 — April 2011
Cyrus and Hemsworth went through a major on-again, off-again period over these months. Despite the fact that Cyrus claimed Hemsworth was her muse for her album, Can’t Be Tamed, in June 2010, they split up two months later. Their August breakup was reportedly the result of her hectic work schedule, though they were spotted out and about together in September.
By the time November rolled around, however, they called it quits again. A source told E! News, “[It’s] just a time out.” Their time out lasted until April 2011, when they started back up by “taking it slow and just enjoying each other’s company.”
Cyrus and Hemsworth are engaged! After more than a year of accompanying each other to events and seeming happier than ever, they decided to make it even more serious. “I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam,” Cyrus told People. Her 3.5-carat engagement ring was designed by none other than Neil Lane.
February 2013 — March 2013
In February 2013, Perez Hilton stirred up trouble by suggesting Cyrus had cheated on Hemsworth with Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick. Adding fuel to the fire, Cyrus and Hemsworth attended two separate Oscar parties, but Cyrus decided to set the record straight. She tweeted, “@perezhilton hope you find love one day but can you not f*ck with mine. I’ve never been with Ed W in my life. I was at the studio last night.”
By the next month, Cyrus was seen without her engagement ring, prompting her to once again dispel rumors on Twitter. “I am so sick of La,” she wrote. “And sick of the lies that come with it. I didn’t call off my wedding. Taking a break from social media. #draining.”
Cyrus unfollowed Hemsworth on Twitter — basically all the confirmation we needed to know it was over. Then, after three days of speculation, Cyrus’ rep announced the end of their engagement. Literally the next day, Hemsworth was spotted kissing Eiza Gonzalez, so we knew for sure he and Cyrus were done.
During the same month, at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, Cyrus delivered an incredibly emotional performance of “Wrecking Ball” (a song that’s definitely about Hemsworth).
October 2015 — November 2015
After two years of Cyrus and Hemsworth being broken up, Hemsworth spoke up about their relationship in an interview with Men’s Fitness. In October 2015, Hemsworth called his time with Cyrus “an important part of my life.” He added, “You fall in love with who you fall in love with; you can never choose.”
The next month, Cyrus helped Hemsworth adopt a new dog named Dora the Explorer, so they were clearly spending time together again.
Cyrus and Hemsworth rang in 2016 with headlines about their relationship status. After popping up in Instagram photos with Hemsworth, she was spotted wearing her very same Neil Lane engagement ring again. She was even seen with a moving truck at Hemsworth’s house, though they had yet to announce their reunion.
However, after just a few days, a source told People that Cyrus and Hemsworth’s engagement was back on.
April 2016 — May 2016
Following their re-engagement, Cyrus and Hemsworth reemerged into the public eye in April 2016 while grabbing lunch together in Australia. Then, in May of that year, Hemsworth spilled to GQ about their 2013 breakup. “At the time we were going in different directions and it’s just what needed to happen,” he said. “We were both super young and it was a good decision at the time — we both needed that.”
In an appearance on Ellen, Cyrus confirmed her engagement to Hemsworth for the first time.
Cyrus released her new song, “Malibu,” which she admitted is a love song about Hemsworth. She wanted the single to control the narrative of her relationship, as she told Billboard, “They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam. So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?”
In an interview with The Sun on Sunday, Cyrus gave an update on her wedding plans. Despite being engaged, she wasn’t in any rush to walk down the aisle:
I don’t envision marriage. I’m 24. I hope I get to live a little bit more. I have too much living to do [before I get married]. Three years ago, if you’d asked me if I’d be here, this happy with this man, I’d have been stunned. I’m just riding this out. In some relationships, you lose yourself by being with someone else. Actually, it made me find myself more. I have no idea what the next three years will bring, but if it’s possible to get even happier, I’ll take it.
Cyrus and Hemsworth attended their first red carpet event together in four years. Of course, their debut was in support of Hemsworth’s brother, Chris, for the release of his movie, Thor: Ragnarok.
Pregnancy rumors began circulating after Cyrus posted a photo of herself in an oversized shirt. She included the hashtag, “#VeganTurkeyBaby,” so many took it to mean she was referencing an actual baby. Cyrus used her Instagram stories to shut down those rumors. “Not pregnant just eating a shit ton of tofurkey,” she wrote. “Rude!!!!”
January 2018 — June 2018
Throughout the first half of 2018, Cyrus and Hemsworth didn’t shy away from spending time together in public. In January, they visited Australia for Hemsworth’s 28th birthday, looking totally in love while perusing the streets.
They even attended another red carpet event together, this time at the 90th Academy Awards in March. Following a few more lovey-dovey moments on social media and in-person, they were seen walking around Los Angeles in June 2018.
Cyrus deleted all photos on her Instagram account, including those of her with Hemsworth. While many stars have taken this approach in preparation for new music, her social media blackout came at the time that new breakup rumors began surfacing.
According to The Daily Mail, a source told OK! Australia that Cyrus and Hemsworth have called off their wedding. The source claims, “He wants kids and doesn’t want to keep putting it off but it’s not quite the timeline Miley had in mind … he is left heartbroken.”
“Miley put off plans for the wedding and Liam was growing tired of it,” the source added. “They haven’t been getting along in recent months.” Could her deleted social media presence mean the breakup rumors are true? Only time will tell.
