Why Is Miley Cyrus Feuding About Cake?

Miley Cyrus is proving that you cannot, in fact, have your cake and eat it too. The She Is Coming artist has had her fair share of scandals, but recently the 26-year-old songwriter found herself in hot water over…a cake.

Planned Parenthood

Yesterday Cyrus took to her Instagram to tease an upcoming collaboration with Planned Parenthood, Marc Jacobs, and her personal charity, the Happy Hippie Foundation. The image used to promote the collaboration shows Cyrus licking a cake with rainbow confetti and the words “ABORTION IS HEALTHCARE.”

The image quickly garnered a lot of attention and many were praising Cyrus for using her platform and influence to shed light on women’s rights. But, not all the attention was positive. Cyrus’ post managed to catch the eye of D.C. baker Becca Rea-Holloway, known on Instagram as @thesweetfeminist, and Holloway was quick to point out that the cake used in Cyrus’ image was copied from one of her original designs.

Abortion Is Healthcare

Posting a side-by-side comparison of the two cakes, Holloway (who is known for writing empowering feminists messages on baked goods) was quick to say that the cake Cyrus posted was theft of her original design. The baker also mentioned that the “Mother’s Daughter” singer and her team didn’t even bother to give her credit for the usage of her original art.

Holloway’s followers were outraged at seeing the comparison, many of them believing that Holloway herself was the artist of the cake featured in Cyrus’ image. Upon realizing that she was not, they went to the singer’s original post to state their displeasure. Many of them reported back to Holloway that their negative comments had been deleted from the “Cattitude” singer’s page.

Miley’s team swiftly tried to diffuse the situation. “Hi, we saw the image online and didn’t realize it was yours. We will absolutely tag you for your work. This image is not on the Marc Jacobs x Planned Parenthood hoodie we made to raise money and awareness for Planned Parenthood which I know is also close to your heart. It is just on the post and not on the merchandise but we will absolutely tag you and give you the credit for your art. If you could please correct your post, as we’re going to make sure you have all the credit you deserve… thanks for sharing your art and inspiring us. 🎂 ” Cyrus’ team wrote in a caption on Holloway’s post.

Intellectual property

The baker was quick to acknowledge the songwriter’s comment but insisted that it was not enough to rectify the situation. She stated that it wouldn’t be hard to trace the original inspiration picture back to her and that by not reaching out prior to utilizing her artwork Cyrus’ was being willfully deceitful.

@mileycyrus Hi there, I appreciate your quick response and I’m thrilled that Miley is working with Planned Parenthood to support their incredible work. While I acknowledge your tag (although it should also be in the caption itself), it doesn’t change the fact that my work was used without compensation and without my consent and it is not sufficient. My original image was shared widely, but it certainly would not have been difficult for someone on your team to trace it back to the source (this is clear from the number of people who immediately recognized it as my work). This was not an oversight, it was blatantly and willfully neglectful and deceitful.” the baker fired back in response.

The baker continued on to say that she would have loved to collaborate if only she had been approached and fairly compensated. “I would have been more than happy to work with you on a collaboration for this project, but instead, my work was just copied without compensation. Someone got paid to make, style, and photograph this cake, and it wasn’t me. It’s also totally unacceptable that you deleted my comment on the post.” she continued on in her response.

Impasse

Despite the growing number of people who are calling out Cyrus for the way she chose to respond to Holloway’s post, Cyrus’ team has yet to comment on Holloway’s latest comeback. Holloway has also shared that she has been receiving hateful messages from the singer’s fans because of the ongoing incident. Some fans are even going so far as to threaten the baker’s life. It’s a shame that this situation is panning out this way, particularly when Cyrus and Holloway are both so aligned in their feminist beliefs. We can only hope they find a way to work it out.
