Why did Millie Bobby Brown partner with the nonprofit, UNICEF?

She’s more than just Eleven on Netflix’s Stranger Things. In an interview with Teen Vogue, the young actress opened up about partnering with a cause that she cared about. She stated that UNICEF’s message lines up closely with her own.

“I think it’s important to make sure that I’m attaching myself to the right material, things that are appropriate for my age, characters that I relate to and connect to, and things that have an underlying message,” Brown said. “I mean, something that I feel so passionate about, and the reason that I love working with UNICEF, are the underlying issues and messages through my work.”

UNICEF, formerly known as United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, is a nonprofit started by the United Nations to aid children, protect their rights, and provide them with emergency food and healthcare.

Several celebrities partner with the organization to be UNICEF ambassadors, including Selena Gomez, Lucy Liu, P!nk, and Alyssa Milano. Additionally, other celebrities, like Alex Morgan, Betty Who, and Gigi Hadid, are listed as UNICEF supporters. Millie Bobby Brown is the youngest-ever celebrity to be a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador.

“It’s a dream come true to become a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador,” said Brown. “It’s a huge honor to join such an impressive list of people who have supported UNICEF over the years. I am looking forward to meeting as many children and young people as I can, hearing their stories, and speaking out on their behalf.”

What does it mean to be a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador?

As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Millie Bobby Brown has a unique role in the charity. Because of her global platform, the actress will “help raise awareness of children’s rights and issues affecting youth, such as lack of education, safe places to play and learn, and the impact of violence, bullying, and poverty.”

This is a title the Stranger Things actress does not take lightly. She’s often posting on Instagram regarding her education, supporting equality among young girls and young boys. Equality is not all that Brown stands for — in her cover story with Teen Vogue, the actress explained how she cares about children across multiple different boards.

“I don’t think there’s a limitation at all to what you can stand for. I mean, for me, there are so many issues with children’s rights, you can’t just pinpoint one thing,” Brown said. “Yeah, there’s bullying, and yes, there’s exploitation, and yes there’s the fact that there’s no clean water in some countries that are not as privileged as others. I can’t pin myself to one thing because I will feel immediately like I’m being drawn to something else.”

Season 3 of Stranger Things is now available for streaming on Netflix.
