If there’s one thing Marvel fans love, it’s speculation. Rumors have been flying across the internet regarding Avengers: Infinity War, which is headed to theaters in April 2018. What we do know is that Thanos is after the Infinity Stones, and he’s going to be going up against a lot of our favorite heroes to do so. But there’s a lot of mystery surrounding the rest of the film’s details.
With new information poised to come at any, MCU devotees are on high alert for any news surrounding the end of Phase 3 and the beginning of Phase 4. And as Infinity War draws closer, we’re scrambling to get wind of any info that might enlighten us as to how the epic battle goes down.
Without further ado, here are the craziest Infinity War theories that actually hold some weight.
Scarlet Witch is a villain
This fan theory came from a Redditor, so take it with a grain of salt. However, he’s certainly got some compelling arguments.
According to JasonTodd027, Scarlet Witch is responsible for the creation of Ultron. She was also at fault in Captain America: Civil War, when she caused the collapse of the building that eventually led to the Sokovia Accords.
It’s true that Wanda has a lot to be angry about. Her parents died, then her brother was killed in battle while helping the Avengers. And even if she’s not evil at the moment, her sometimes love interest, Vision, is in grave danger, as Thanos will be going after him for the Infinity Stone that powers him.
Looks like we should be keeping an eye on Ms. Maximoff.
The Infinity Stones spell out ‘THANOS’
This one is particularly mind-blowing, so hold onto your viewing device. According to a long-time theory, the containing object of each Infinity Stone correlates to a letter, spelling out the name of the one who is searching for them.
Though the theory has been circling the internet for years, recent developments have almost completely confirmed it. As Movie Pilot writes, the only letter left is H, which they speculate stands for Hela, the villain of Thor: Ragnarok.
However, Redditors have other ideas. User danyelledesean believes that the Soul Stone will be revealed in Black Panther, and that H stands for heart, as in the “Heart of Wakanda.” Whatever the answer is, the intricacies of this theory have made it a lot of fun for fans to play around with, and we’ll have our answers soon enough.
A new Captain America will come to power
Chris Evans has expressed for some time that he’s interested in moving on from the role of Steve Rogers. But this doesn’t mean that Cap’s shield will go unused.
As with many comic book heroes, different people have held the title of Captain America throughout time. One of them? None other than Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier.
What’s more, a credible source has spoken on this. Artist Steve McNiven, who worked on the Civil War comic book, speculated that perhaps Barnes would take over the role, as he did in print. McNiven also expressed his own desire to see Sam Wilson (currently Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie) fill the Cap’s shoes, should he die in Infinity War.
The Guardians of the Galaxy have the most to lose
These films have remained almost completely separate from others in the MCU, but Infinity War has brought about the perfect opportunity for the Guardians to team up with the Avengers. After all, they’re the ones with insider knowledge of Thanos, so it makes sense that Iron Man and company will want their help this time around.
But two of our Guardians have a personal stake in the game, making them vulnerable. Drax, as you might recall from the first film, was after Ronan the Accuser. Once he was defeated, however, Drax revealed that Thanos was his real target, as Ronan was just a pawn of Thanos.
Then there’s Gamora. Abducted and raised by Thanos, she was made into a human weapon, after the villain killed her parents and destroyed her home planet. Though she began the series on a mission for him, she quickly revealed herself to be a traitor, before settling in with the Guardians. Needless to say, Gamora has a lot of beef with Thanos, and will definitely risk her life to keep him from obtaining all of the Stones.
A major hero will die
In a battle as big as this one, it’s inevitable that some of our favorite heroes will succumb to Thanos’ wrath. It’s just a matter of who.
Sadly, this may come down more to contracts and the desires of the actors rather than anything else. In addition to Evans, Robert Downey Jr. has said that he’s looking forward to taking off the Iron Man suit for good.
As for who else may kick the bucket? That’s anyone’s guess, as the Infinity Gauntlet comic arc sees Thanos killing almost everyone in his path. Yikes.
Thanos has minions
While Thanos is clearly the primary villain in Infinity War, he likely isn’t at this alone. Though we haven’t seen him on screen much, we know that Thanos has commanded at least a few characters thus far, including Ronan. But who will he be bringing to this battle?
In the comics, Thanos’ commands the Black Order, and recent photos from the set of the film have led to speculation around their possible appearance. This could encompass several different characters, but there’s one that we’re almost certain will show up.
An image showing Doctor Strange portrayer Benedict Cumberbatch being pinned down by a man in a motion capture suit has sparked rumors about Ebony Maw, as a sticker on the person’s back read “EB-MAW.” This “dangerous thinker” is an important part of the Black Order, so it would make sense that he shows up to help out Thanos.
More than 30 characters will appear in one scene
This tidbit was shared by Black Widow herself. While appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to promote her film, Rough Night, Scarlett Johansson let slip a little secret about Infinity War.
When pressed about details, Johansson told Colbert that there are 60-plus different Marvel characters in the film. Colbert assumed she meant in one scene, and then she clarified a bit: “I think in one particular scene there’s like 32 — there’s a lot.” With that much superpower on screen, who knows what will happen in the end.
