Mindy Kaling Reveals What’s Next for Her After ‘The Mindy Project’ Ends

The Mindy Project is just weeks away from airing its final episode, and creator Mindy Kaling is now giving fans a better idea of what’s next for her.

In a new interview on Today, Kaling said that now that she’ll have more room in her schedule, she would like to act in even more movies, especially after having a good experience on Ocean’s Eight and A Wrinkle in Time.

“I had not really done big, big movies until this past year, so I had a great experience shooting Ocean’s Eight and A Wrinkle in Time, so I’d love to be in more movies and to not have to write them,” she said. “That was a nice experience, to just show up as an actor…and to just have that responsibility only.”

In the more immediate future, Kaling this spring will be shooting a movie called Late Night that she wrote and will star in alongside Emma Thompson. The film will follow a veteran late night talk show host, played by Thompson, who decides to hire her first female writer, played by Kaling. Nisha Ganatra will direct; Ganatra is primarily known for her work directing episodes of several shows including Transparent and Dear White People.

Mindy Kaling saw success due to her writing before her acting. She was hired for Season 1 of The Office as a writer first and as a performer second, having a very minor role in the show’s first season but slowly becoming a prominent character in the series. When The Office ended, she created her own show, The Mindy Project, which she starred in but also wrote many episodes of. Though Kaling clearly plans to continue writing, and she’s about to shoot a movie that she wrote, she also says that she looks forward to taking on some more roles that she did not write herself, as she recently did on Ocean’s Eight and A Wrinkle in Time.

In Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, Mindy Kaling plays Mrs. Who, one of three supernatural beings the main character encounters along with Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon) and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey). In Ocean’s Eight, a spinoff of the popular Ocean’s Eleven movies, Kaling plays one of the members of the heist, starring alongside Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, and Sarah Paulson.

Mindy Kaling is currently pregnant, and so this is obviously a big part of her future as well.

“People tell me that when they have children, they like to spend time with them, so I’d like to spend time with my child,” Kaling joked on Today.

Kaling also said that she has so many things she wants to do, including becoming a photographer and starting a fashion line, and so she sometimes becomes overwhelmed.

“There’s so much that I want to do in my life that I can’t believe how short it is,” she said. “Especially when my mom passed away and she was so young, I just got to think, ‘God, you really have to just pack it in.'”

The Mindy Project is currently airing its final season on Hulu. The series finale will premiere on November 14.
