The Trailer for ‘Miss Americana’ Deconstructs How You See Taylor Swift
The trailer for Taylor Swift’s Netflix documentary Miss Americana dropped on Jan. 22. The trailer previews what is bound to be a compelling look at Swift’s life. It also makes it clear that with the documentary, Swift is deconstructing the persona put on her by industry executives and the media.
‘Miss Americana’ will show another side of Taylor Swift
After a short clip of Swift backstage with her mom, the trailer for Miss Americana opens with a quote from Swift that sets the tone for the movie.
“Throughout my whole career, label executives would just say, ‘a nice girl, doesn’t force their opinions on people; a nice girl, smiles and waves and says thank you.’ I became the person everyone wanted me to be,” Swift says.
The voice-over plays over clips of Swift throughout stages of her career. When the voice-over ends, clips of the media discussing what they do not like about Swift play. Swift then continues the voice-over and references the year she stayed out of the public eye before her Reputation era.
“Nobody physically saw me for a year, and that was what I thought they wanted. I had to deconstruct an entire belief system, toss it out and reject it. It woke me up from constantly feeling like I was fighting for people’s respect. It was happiness without anyone else’s input,” she says.
Throughout the rest of the trailer, Swift discusses her decision to go public with her political views, how she found happiness, and what it was like when she stopped trying to fight for people’s respect.
Fans are ready for ‘Miss Americana’
After the trailer dropped, fans flooded social media with posts about how excited they are for the upcoming documentary.
“JOE ALWYN IS IN TAYLOR SWIFT:MISS AMERICANA NOBODY TOUCH ME MY FEELINGS HURT,” a fan tweeted.
“TAYLOR SWIFT IS GONNA END CAREERS WITH MISS AMERICANA,” wrote a Twitter user.
“Hats off to @taylorswift13 … She blew us all with Miss Americana trailer. Standing and fighting for respect. Coming out with your problems to share with the world…it requires great bravery…..,” one fan tweeted.
“TAYLOR SWIFT:MISS AMERICANA IS GOING TO SPILL THE TEA AND ADDRESS EVERYTHING THIS COULD BE SO BRUTAL,” a fan wrote on Twitter.
Taylor Swift’s ‘Miss Americana’ will feature a new song
Fans were happy that Swift’s newest album Lover featured a total of 18 songs. It turns out Miss Americana will feature a previously unheard song by Swift, adding to the excitement.
“The doc doesn’t lack for its own protest songs though. In the wake of her midterm disappointment, Swift is seen writing an anthem for millennials who might have come away disillusioned with the political process. That previously unheard song, ‘Only the Young,’ is seen being demo-ed before it plays in full over the end credits; it’ll be released as a digital single in conjunction with the doc,” reports Variety.
Much of Miss Americana focuses on Swift finding her political voice. Swift laments at the beginning of the documentary’s trailer that she was always encouraged to not give her opinion. Miss Americana seems to be the opposite of that, and will give fans insight to what led Swift to become more political while also not caring about what people think of her.
