What You Didn’t Know About Missy Elliot’s VMA Video Vanguard Award
Tonight, Missy Elliot finally receives her long-overdue Video Vanguard Award at the 2019 MTV VMA’s. The artist has worked incredibly hard for the past several decades displaying a whole host of talents. Not only is Missy Elliot a talented rapper, but she is also a singer, songwriter, dancer, producer, and philanthropist. The performer has worked with countless big names in the industry, and her body of work truly speaks for itself.
What is the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award
The Video Vanguard Award (often referred to as the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award) is the highest award given at the MTV Video Music Awards. It is awarded to performers to recognize outstanding achievements in music and film. The award was first given at the inaugural VMA’s and was later renamed for the late Michael Jackson in 1991. Past recipients include The Beatles, Beyonce, U2, David Bowie, and Britney Spears. The award is highly coveted and considered a great honor.
Missy Elliot is the recipient of the award for the 2019 VMA’s
This year, MTV has chosen to honor Missy Elliot with the award. The singer was completely overjoyed when she found out and took to her Instagram page to express her gratitude. “I am Humbly Grateful to be receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. I Thank my FANS “Supafriends” who fought diligently to see this day come. Kid Fury and Crissle who rooted for years! I am crying right now so thankful,” Missy Elliot gushed.
The dancer then went on to say that she didn’t know if she would ever be honored with such a prestigious award, but she was incredibly humbled by the win. “I didn’t know if I would ever receive this but I want y’all to know I do not take it for Granted I am GRATEFUL Atlantic Records, Mons Scott Young. Thank you Dear God!!! MTV VMA’s I am SO HUMBLED #VA hometeam! two up two down❤️ Lastly, the WHOLE DANCE COMMUNITY,” the “Work It” rapper shared.
Kid Fury and Crissle of The Read
While plenty of fans and other celebrities were thrilled that Missy Elliot was finally getting the Video Vanguard Award, two people who were probably the most excited were Kid Fury and Crissle, who Missy Elliot shouted out in her post. If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know who they are the hosts of the wildly popular podcast called The Read. The two are huge stans of Missy Elliot and have openly shown their support for years. In fact, Kid Fury has a legendary rant from 2015, where he throws shade at those who don’t recognize Missy Elliot’s talent. (You can listen to the rant below, which starts at the 1:25:00 mark.)
Word eventually reached Missy Elliot and she was, of course, extraordinarily gracious. As Kid Fury and Crissle continued to show their love (often dragging MTV and the VMA’s for not giving Missy Elliott the award sooner) the “Lose Control” artist was overwhelmed with gratitude. Back in 2018, she made a promise to them that if she ever received the Video Vanguard Award, she would invite them as her guests. “Matter fact if God ever has it that I ever do Kid Fury & Crissle would be my guest,” the artist promised on Twitter.
A year later, most people had forgotten about the promise. But Missy Elliot, being the legend she is, didn’t forget. Instead, she recently tweeted the pair inviting them. “Look BELOW this was July 23rd, 2018 I promised @KidFury & @crissles if I ever received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award they would be my guest because they pushed for me and here we are. Their tix in 2019,” the 2019 MTV VMA Video Vanguard Award recipient tweeted.
It’s great to see Missy Elliot going above and beyond for those who supported her. It’s such a sweet way to show appreciation. We truly can’t wait to see the performance that she has in store for us tonight. We know whatever it is, it’ll be iconic and supa dupa fly.
