Missy Elliott And Alyson Stoner Reunite For ‘Work It’ At the 2019 VMAs

When we’re talking about music legends, Missy Elliott is a name that may not frequently come up. However, the artist is more than deserving of the adjective legendary. To prove that, MTV acknowledged her at the VMAs this year.

For her out-of-this-world (literally) performance at the 2019 award show, Elliott welcomed a very special guest to the stage: Dancer Alyson Stoner. Here’s a look back at how the two know each other.

Elliott and Stoner go way back

Chances are, when you think of Elliott, your first thought it of her early ’00s hits, like her 2002 single “Work It.” Go ahead, relive those years and watch the video above, which marks the time period with tracksuits, faux fur, and bulky Nokia cellphones, among other things.

Now, pause the video around 2:32. Elliott is dancing on a playground with a bunch of kids. See the tiniest among them, in white in the very front? That’s Stoner, at age nine. The young dancer also appeared in two other videos with Elliott: “Gossip Folks” and “I’m Really Hot.”

OK, now that we’ve taken a trip to the past, let’s flashforward seventeen years. Elliott has continued to be a force in the industry, winning five Grammys selling millions upon millions of records. She’s also brought her musical magic to other artists like Keyshia Cole and Jennifer Hudson.

In honor of her hard work, Elliott was honored at the MTV VMAs this year, receiving the Video Vanguard award for her incredible videos and music over the years.

In addition to being honored with the Vanguard award, Elliott performed at the MTV VMAs. She began with a newer song, but eventually brought it back to many of her old hits, including “Work It.”

While the infamous track played, one dancer in a yellow tracksuit got their very own moment in the spotlight. If you look closely, you’ll realize its Stoner, the young girl from the song’s video, all grown up. Her moves are just as incredible as they were back then — actually, even more so.

Who is Alyson Stoner?

While you may just know her as the little girl who dances with Elliott, Stoner is now an adult with her own career. Back in the day, she appeared in movies like Cheaper By the Dozen and Step Up. She also voiced the role of Isabella in the popular Disney series Phineas and Ferb.

These days, Stoner continues to do a lot of voice acting, for series like Young Justice and The Legend of Korra. She is also a dancer and singer in her own right, as well as dance teacher, a podcaster, and an activist. But still, many recognize her for working with Elliott, and she’s “forever grateful” to the artist.

Elliott just released a new album

This is clearly a pivotal time in Eliott’s career. In addition to celebrating her past achievements, she’s looking to the future with her new EP Iconology. The first track off it is “Throw It Back,” which Elliott performed at the VMAs, and is a perfect one to kick things off with, as it acknowledges her old hits while also adding some fresh new sounds.
