‘Modern Family’ Actress Ariel Winter Almost Acted in Disney Channel’s ‘Sonny With a Chance’
Before she was the witty, smart, and sarcastic Alex Dunphy, Ariel Winter was almost involved with Sonny With a Chance. Her role in that Disney Channel original series was, reportedly, scrapped, opening her up to opportunities with the Emmy-award winning ABC comedy series.
‘Sonny With a Chance’ starred Demi Lovato as the main character
It was so far, so great while Demi Lovato was the star of this Disney Channel’s original series. There, she appeared as a budding comedy star, Sonny Munroe, who moves to Hollywood and joins the cast of So Random.
Although Sonny Munroe was an only child living with her mom in Disney Channel’s original series, she wasn’t always written like that. For one version of the story, this character had two siblings, including a younger sister, who would’ve been portrayed by Modern Family’s Ariel Winter.
‘Modern Family’ actress Ariel Winter almost appeared on the Disney Channel series
Fans first met the character Alex Dunphy when she was a middle school student. They saw her go to prom, get into CalTech, and even work on some pretty impressive research projects. The actor behind this character, Ariel Winter, was actually almost a cast member in Disney Channel’s Sonny With a Chance instead.
According to Screenrant, “In one version of the script, [Demi Lovato’s character] had a brother and a sister who made the move to Hollywood with her. Ariel Winter was initially cast as the younger sister. When the character was scrapped, she was let go from her contract, freeing her up to become Alex Dunphy on Modern Family.”
Since then, Ariel Winter acted as the misunderstood brainiac in ABC’s original comedy series. Modern Family went on to release 11 seasons, with the final season premiering during 2020. Now, the actress has her sights set on other projects.
Ariel Winter since worked on other Disney projects, including Disney Junior’s ‘Sofia the First’
From 2012 through 2018, Ariel Winter voice-acted for one Disney Junior animated series, titled Sofia the First. This show told the story of one princess in training, named Sofia, who is portrayed by Ariel Winter herself.
The actress also voiced the character for the television special Sofia & Jake: Be Who You Wanna Be. She wouldn’t be the first, (or the last,) Modern Family cast member to pivot to other Disney-related projects.
Ty Burrell and Ed O’Neill voiced characters for Disney and Pixar’s sequel, Finding Dory. Nolan Gould appeared as one of Gabe Duncan’s friends in Good Luck Charlie.
Episodes of Sonny With a Chance and Sofia the First are available for streaming on Disney+. Some seasons of Modern Family, featuring Ariel Winter, are available on Hulu. To learn more about these subscription services, visit their respective websites.
