Here Are Some of Our Favorite Outrageous Moments from ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’
With 11 regular seasons and 4 seasons of All-Stars available for binge-watching, there are plenty of gag-worthy moments in this reality series. Now with season 12 and All-Stars 5 right around the corner, it’s only fitting for a recap of our favorite moments from recent years. Here are just a few of the craziest, weirdest, and most outrageous moments from RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Naomi picking Manila to go home during ‘All Stars-4’
Life’s not fair. Hey, if you’re in a competition where you get to pick who stays and who leaves, there are a lot of hard decisions. Naomi Smalls, formerly of season 8, was there to win and, though it might’ve surprised some viewers, she sent home a frontrunner of the competition, Manila Luzon.
Naomi Smalls then became one of the finalists of the competition, along with Trinity the Tuck and Monét X Change. Also, RuPaul choosing two winners was a bit of a gag, but that’s another conversation.
Shangela not making it to the top of ‘All-Stars 3’
Of all of Shangela’s surprise appearances on RuPaul’s Drag Race, this was probably the most heartbreaking. This contestant made it all the way to the top four, winning multiple challengings and viewers’ hearts along the way.
When it was up to a jury of the queens who would lip-sync for the crown, they chose Trixie Mattel and Kennedy Davenport, despite Shagela’s consistent wins in the competition. (Trixie later shared that Shangela had a piñata and a sledgehammer under her dress, should she have had to lip-sync to “Wrecking Ball.” This is RuPaul’s Ruveal Race after all.)
The massive ‘lip sync for your life’ during ‘Drag Race’ season 11
The song was a remix of “Waiting For Tonight” by Jennifer Lopez. The lip-sync? Literally half the contestants of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 11. After a moderately well-received three-way “lipsync for the crown” on season 10, RuPaul decided to shake things up on the following season of this reality series.
Once a challenge landed an entire team in the bottom, RuPaul chose to make everyone lip-sync for their life that week. (That’s six contestants — Ra’Jah, Shuga, Scarlet, Plastique, Honey, and A’Keria.) Only one performer was sent home, but the lip-sync itself was a little unexpected and, as A.V. Club described it, “monotonous and uninspiring.”
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK had its share of iconic moments, including ‘A red wig and a silver dress?’
All the Oscar nominations can’t top the quotes from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. The first season of this spin-off series premiered during 2019, featuring a new set of queens from England and Ireland. There was a Donald Trump Snatch Game performance, the birth of the “Frock Destroyers” and their chart-topping version of “Break Up Bye Bye.”
However, one of our favorite moments from this season was the call out of Divina De Campo’s red wig and silver dress motif. Red wig and silver dress? She don’t think. The moment went viral on social media, earning retweets and love from Drag Race fans across the globe. There’s even a fan-made paper tribute to Divina’s signature look.
