10 of the Most Hated Musicians of All Time
Whether or not they’re responsible for some of the worst songs ever made, some musicians develop such a contentious relationship with the public that they become nearly as well-known for their bad behavior offstage as they do for their careers. Although they derive from all kinds of musical genres, these artists have become some of the most hated musicians in recent years.
For this list, we are focusing on individual artists only. So don’t expect to find perennially hated bands like Creed or Nickelback on here, or even viral video stars like Rebecca Black. For the record, we’re considering inclusion based on the quality of the music in question, the artist’s public persona, and his or her offstage scandals.
1. Justin Bieber
This Canadian pop star rose to fame when he was just a kid, and as such, he is about as entitled as they come. Even if we set aside his obnoxious, underwhelming music, Bieber has a list of appalling behavior in his wake. Abusive to fans and a spoiled brat through-and-through, there is no way he was ever not making our list.
2. Nicki Minaj
Love her or hate her, Nicki Minaj has delivered many memorable hits in recent years. But her overly sexual persona, her inane melodies and lyrics, and the constant feuds she finds herself in haven’t exactly established her as the most meaningful voice in hip-hop. We miss the days of artistically inspirational female rappers like Lauryn Hill.
3. Chris Brown
Like Bieber, Brown has a troubled offstage life. Most notably, he was involved in a domestic abuse scandal with ex-girlfriend Rihanna, but Brown’s combative attitude doesn’t end there, as he’s been embroiled in legal issues and feuds with other artists. Many have said his vocal and dancing skills are enough to overlook his personal life, but others refuse to forget everything he’s done.
4. Fred Durst
Ask anyone who was following pop music in the late 1990s/early 2000s about the term “douchebag,” and Durst is bound to come up. His music as the frontman of Limp Bizkit is considered virtually unlistenable at this point, and his irritating frat-boy persona is almost as grating as his band’s album, Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water.
5. Taylor Swift
Despite being one of the biggest stars in the world, Swift’s mainstream success in the pop world has led to a backlash, with many people tired of her constant appearances in the tabloids, her suspiciously perfect public persona, and her tendency to write music about her love life. To some, she is the voice of our generation. To others, she should just go away.
6. Axl Rose
As the frontman of Guns N’ Roses, he has contributed significantly to the world of rock music. Yet, Rose is still hated by many because of his ego, diva attitude, and delinquent behavior. However, since he’s such a huge rock star, he gets away with more than most by chocking it all up to his music.
One of the most popular rappers in recent years, this Miami-based artist has seen tremendous success with songs like “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” and “Timber.” Yet, his voice has become grating to some, especially since he has seemed to be everywhere in the past five years. His lazy rhymes and grossly sexual lyrics certainly don’t help.
8. Miley Cyrus
This former child star went from Hannah Montana to one of the most bizarre live performances ever (involving Robin Thicke and a giant foam finger). We understand that the now-adult Cyrus wants to rebel against her former image, but there’s such a thing as going too far. We’ll give “Wrecking Ball” a pass though. That’s still a pretty solid song.
9. Kanye West
What can be said about this self-proclaimed musical genius? His marriage to Kim Kardashian has made him even more of a tabloid target, and his tremendous ego and constant bad behavior certainly haven’t helped win over anyone. Even his music appears to have lost its luster, failing to propel West back to the top of the hip-hop scene.
10. Marilyn Manson
One of the most controversial musical artists ever, Manson’s demonic look at heavy metal sound have naturally turned off many, with accusations of Satanism and other immoral content potentially serving as a negative influence on younger listeners. However, his history of lawsuits and other scandals have only exacerbated his reputation over the years.
