The 10 Most Overpaid Movie Stars of 2016

Being one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors doesn’t necessarily guarantee that your movies will be financially successful. Forbes recently compiled a list of the industry’s most overpaid stars, based on the performance and budget of the last three films each actor starred in before June 2016 (not including animated films or movies that were released on fewer than 2,000 screens).

So which A-list names made the cut? Below, check out 10 movie stars who deliver the least bang for their buck.

10. Bradley Cooper

Several of Cooper’s recent films have underachieved at the box office. Last year’s Joy didn’t impress much critically or commercially. Meanwhile, Aloha performed even more poorly, not even earning back its $37 million budget. These recent bombs, combined with Cooper’s sizable salary, lead to an average return of $12.10 for every $1 paid for the actor.

9. Julia Roberts

Roberts is the only women on Forbes’s ranking of overpaid actors in 2016. Her salaries are significantly lower than the rest of the actors on this list, but her box office returns drag down the average. The underperforming Money Monster and Mother’s Day puts her current return ratio at $10.80 for every $1 paid.

8. Leonardo DiCaprio

You might be surprised to find an acclaimed and notoriously selective actor like DiCaprio on the list, but there’s a good reason: his salary. His oversized paychecks mean that even high-grossing and critically acclaimed films (like The Revenant and Wolf of Wall Street) don’t translate to great returns. His average box office return is currently $9.90 for every $1 paid.

7. Mark Wahlberg

Despite scoring a notable commercial hit with Daddy’s Home, Wahlberg lands within the top 10 of the most overpaid actors of the year. Why? His average continues to be dragged down by the underwhelming performance of 2014’s The Gambler, which barely made back its $25 million budget. The actor earns $9.20 at the box office for every $1 paid.

6. Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler’s attention is now focused on making movies for Netflix, where ticket sales don’t come into play. But he makes the cut on Forbes’s list, thanks to 2015’s disastrous Pixels. Combined with the lackluster performers, Blended and Grown Ups 2, that puts Sandler’s return at $7.60 for every $1 paid.

5. George Clooney

Clooney has proven to be a big box office draw in the past, but his movies didn’t fare quite as well over the past year. The Coen brothers’ comedy Hail, Caesar! earned strong reviews from critics, but only brought in modest earnings in ticket sales. Money Monster, in which he co-starred opposite Julia Roberts, fared better, but also wasn’t exactly a smash hit. So where does that leave his average in box office returns? Clooney is currently earning only about $6.70 at the box office for every $1 paid.

4. Will Ferrell

After taking the No. 3 spot on the ranking in 2015, Ferrell returns to the list again this year. The actor starred in the long-awaited but highly disappointing Zoolander 2, which garnered dismal reviews and only managed to earn $6 million more than its $50 million budget. Thanks to the underperforming sequel, Ferrell’s average box office returns currently stand at $6.50 for every $1 paid.

3. Channing Tatum

Given what a smash hit Magic Mike XXL was (earning $122 million against a $14.8 million budget), Tatum may seem like a surprising name to have on this list. But his average is dragged down by the disastrous performance of the 2015 flop, Jupiter Ascending. That puts him in the top three of the most overpaid actors of the year, returning only $6 for every $1 paid.

2. Will Smith

After taking the No. 5 spot on 2015’s ranking, Smith returns to the list this year. The actor starred in the Oscar hopeful film Concussion, which went on to gross a disappointing $48.6 million and ultimately failed to nab a nomination. Since Smith’s movies have to earn big money to balance out his huge paychecks, his recent underperforming films have resulted in some not-so-great returns. The actor only currently earns about $5 at the box office for every $1 paid.

1. Johnny Depp

Depp takes the title of Hollywood’s most overpaid actor for the second year in a row. The expensive sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass bombed at the box office, earning just $300 million on a $170 million plus budget. The movie marks only the latest in a string of costly flops for Depp, who is now only returning a low $2.80 at the box office for every $1 paid.
