The Movies and TV Shows the Royal Family Loves to Watch
We sometimes think of members of the British royal family as being far removed from the reality of the average person. But while that might be true to some degree, there’s one thing that we all have in common with them: In many cases, we’re obsessed with the same movies and TV shows.
Indeed, members of the British royal family have expressed their affinity for some of the most popular shows and movies out there, although a few of their favorites might actually surprise you. Here’s a look at some of the movies and TV shows that the royal family loves to watch.
1. Prince William and Kate Middleton love Homeland and Game of Thrones
In an interview with BBC Radio 1 in April 2017, Prince William said that he and Kate Middleton are “big fans of Homeland.” He added that they love Game of Thrones as well. However, it sounds like they don’t usually watch the shows live, as he noted that the two of them both enjoy box sets.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are evidently as obsessed with finding out what happens next on Game of Thrones as any fan. In July 2017, the two met actor Tom Wlaschiha (Jaqen H’ghar) at an event, and they were apparently hounding him for spoilers.
“They said they really liked Game of Thrones and have watched every series,” Wlaschiha told the Evening Standard. “They wanted spoilers but I said I couldn’t tell them. I’m surprised they have time to watch such a long running series.”
2. Prince Harry loves Zulu
Prince Harry’s favorite film is Zulu, the 1964 movie starring Michael Caine that depicts the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, an 1879 battle in the Anglo-Zulu War.
“I watch this film every single year before Christmas time,” he said. “Maybe once. Maybe twice.”
3. Queen Elizabeth loves Downton Abbey
As you might expect, Queen Elizabeth is apparently a huge fan of Downton Abbey. According to The Daily Telegraph, while the show was on the air, she always enjoyed watching it and picking out mistakes.
“She loves watching Downton Abbey and pointing out things they have got wrong, partly because she is familiar with Highclere Castle, where it is filmed,” journalist Brian Hoey said. “She used to stay there as a guest of the Carnarvon family.”
She’s not the only Downton lover in the family. Prince William has said that he’s a big fan too, saying his wife made him watch it. And Middleton is such a big fan that she actually visited the set in 2015.
Some other shows that the queen is said to enjoy include The X-Factor and Coach Trip.
4. Prince Harry and Queen Elizabeth both love Britain’s Got Talent
The X-Factor isn’t the only British competition show that the royal family has been known to enjoy.
According to The Independent, Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden says Prince Harry once revealed to her that he records the show every single week. He also had a surprising question for her: “Is Piers Morgan really a prat?” Holden says her response was, “You can’t say that but yes.”
Apparently, the queen watches too, as a former contestant says that Harry told him the queen loved his performance on the show.
5. Prince William and Kate Middleton love One Tree Hill
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s favorite shows don’t just include modern ones like Game of Thrones. They’re also huge fans of One Tree Hill.
In an interview, William Moseley, star of The Royals, was asked if he thinks William and Kate watch the show. He wasn’t sure, but he revealed that they’re both big fans of One Tree Hill, the previous show from the creator of The Royals.
“Fortunately William and Kate were fans of our creator’s first show One Tree Hill,” Moseley said. “So they might tune in and have a quiet watch.”
6. Prince George loves The Lion King
Although he’s just 4 years old, Prince George is already developing some film favorites In October 2017, Prince William revealed that his son “quite likes The Lion King,” adding that they’ve watched it a few times.
William also said that George has watched some of the LEGO movies. “Trying to keep him off the television is hard work,” he said.
7. Prince Edward and Queen Elizabeth love The Crown
When Netflix came out with their show The Crown, a historical drama about Queen Elizabeth II, a lot of people were curious what the British royal family themselves would think of it. As it turns out, they approve.
According to The Telegraph, Prince Edward and Countess Sophie love The Crown. They reportedly have a Netflix account, and they urged Queen Elizabeth to watch it with them. “Happily, she really liked it, although obviously there were some depictions of events that she found too heavily dramatised,” The Telegraph reported.
Princess Eugenie of York also really likes the show. She said of it, “The music is wonderful, the story is beautiful. You feel very proud to watch it. I can’t speak for everyone, but that’s how I felt when I watched it.”
8. Prince William and Prince Harry both love Star Wars
In terms of big movie franchises, Prince William and Prince Harry are big fans of Star Wars. And because they’re royalty, they actually got to journey to the galaxy far, far away themselves.
During the production of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, William and Harry got to visit the set, hanging out with BB-8 and hugging Chewbacca. They also got to play stormtroopers in a scene. Unfortunately, though, Harry and William’s scene was cut; it took place in an elevator on the First Order’s ship after Finn and Rose are captured.
“They cut it out of the film,” John Boyega said. “I did personally apologize to [the princes] yesterday and said, ‘Sorry you were cut out of the film. Will was like, ‘I guess I just need to work more on the skill.’”
