‘Avengers 4’ Could Feature the Return of These Favorite Characters
Avengers 4 will be the finale of the first 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And director Joe Russo says that every story in the MCU since Iron Man will have “a narrative thread in these next two Avengers movies.”
If this is a finale, it would make sense that some people would unexpectedly return. Now, there’s evidence that a bunch of past characters will indeed make their way back into the Marvel universe for Avengers 4, including a character we haven’t seen in four years but who a lot of fans want to see more of (page 5).
1. Harley Keener
Iron Man 3 introduced us to Harley Keener, a young boy played by Ty Simpkins who Tony Stark forms a bond with. During his final scene in the movie, Harley returns home to his garage to find out that Tony has decked it out with new equipment.
We haven’t heard anything about what Harley has been up to since then. But according to Slashfilm, Simpkins will reprise the role in Avengers 4.
The film’s actors have spoken about a giant scene that has the whole cast in it; fans have speculated that this is either Tony Stark’s wedding or funeral. So it’s possible that Harley will have made it out for either of these occasions.

Quicksilver was one of the first major Marvel superheroes to actually die, as he was killed off in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But in May 2018, there were reports that Aaron Taylor-Johnson was spotted on the Avengers 4 set.
It makes absolutely no sense for Quicksilver to have secretly survived. But his appearance in Avengers 4 would be possible if the rumors are true that the film involves time travel.
Next: This character sat out Infinity War but might be in Avengers 4.
Fans loved Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. But unfortunately, she did not appear in Avengers: Infinity War. Nobody even knew at first whether she survived Thanos’ attack in the opening scene, although the directors later confirmed she did.
So could she return for Avengers 4? Well, back in May 2017, Thompson was spotted in the United Kingdom with Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth, where filming for Avengers was reportedly taking place; also there was the prop that’s used on set for Rocket. At the time, it was thought that this scene was for Infinity War, but it must have been for Avengers 4.
Next: We haven’t seen this character for four years, but she might be back soon.
4. Peggy Carter
We last saw Peggy Carter on screen in the Marvel films in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, when Steve Rogers visits her in the hospital. In the next film, Civil War, we find out that Peggy has died in her sleep. Hayley Atwell continued to play young Peggy on Agent Carter until it was canceled in 2016.
But could she return? If this is the end of Captain America’s story, it would make sense to see Peggy one last time, even if it’s just via a flashback or vision sequence. Based on set photos, there also seems to be a scene that takes place in the 1940s.
Atwell sounds like she’s up for returning. In addition, she posted a picture in September 2017 with motion capture dots all over her face. Filming was taking place at this time, so could it be that she already filmed her return, and those motion capture dots are to age her up like Marvel did with The Winter Soldier?
Next: This character’s storyline was almost completely dropped.
5. Jane Foster
We haven’t seen Jane Foster since Thor: The Dark World, although Thor: Ragnarok established that Thor and Jane broke up off screen. But we recently got an interesting hint that she could return.
The Huffington Post spoke with Joe and Anthony Russo after Infinity War, asking them to confirm which characters died off screen when Thanos snapped his fingers. The Russos were willing to reveal that people like Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) and Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander) are dead while Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) is alive.
However, when asked about Jane Foster, they wouldn’t give an answer, saying it’s too spoilery. If Jane isn’t in Avengers 4, or if she doesn’t impact the plot in any way, there’d be no reason the Russos couldn’t give an answer. So this suggests that Jane may return in the film. At the very least, Thor could find out about her death.
Next: We’ll see this character again, even though he’s dead.
Coming out of Infinity War, it seemed like Loki would be one of the few characters whose death remains permanent. However, while that might be true, that doesn’t mean we’re not going to see him again. Tom Hiddleston has been spotted on set filming scenes for Avengers 4 but playing younger Loki from 2012’s The Avengers.
It seems that there’s a scene that takes place back at the Battle of New York, so we’ll run into Loki from that movie again. Some of the characters in these photos look different than they really did in The Avengers; for example, Tony Stark is wearing a S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform. However, Loki looks exactly like he did during that movie.
So the theory is that the Avengers travel back in time to the Battle of New York, and it looks like at some point, they’ll run into 2012 Loki, which will give us an opportunity to see him potentially for the last time.
Next: It seems like this dead character will also be back.
What about Gamora? Her death was one of the big, emotional moments of Infinity War, but is Avengers 4 going to reverse it? It does seem like it will, with the common theory being that Gamora will return because her soul is actually trapped inside the Soul Stone.
We know for a fact that we’ll be seeing Gamora again in some fashion, though. Zoe Saldana has confirmed that she filmed scenes for Avengers 4, and she even once said that she’s in a scene with Robert Downey Jr., suggesting that we don’t just see her in visions or flashbacks.
Plus, she says that she’s in a big scene that has almost the entire cast in it. If it has the whole cast, it must take place after everyone has returned to life, which suggests that Gamora will come back for good.
