Ben Mendelsohn Called Spider-Man a “Pornstar”; Here’s Why

By now, the news of Marvel losing Spider-Man then striking a new deal with Sony that brought Spidey back to the MCU is old news. It was a highly stressful time for fans and actors in the franchise alike, but it had a happy ending (for now). One mega-Spider-Man fan is Ben Mendelsohn, who recently reprised his role of Talos in Spider-Man: Far From Home

And he’s not just a casual fan, as you can tell by his most recent interview. He has a pretty intense take on Peter Parker staying in the MCU.

Ben Mendelsohn is very much a Spider-Man stan

In an interview with Metro on Nov. 6 to promote his new Netflix movie, The King, Mendelsohn let it all out on how strongly he felt about Spider-Man staying in the MCU and how big of a deal he was for the universe. “But sh*t man. You can’t lose Spider-Man from the Marvel universe. He’s one of their absolute motherf*cking pornstars,” he expressed. “Boy, I could name 30 that you could quite comfortably lose before you start thinking about losing Spider-Man.”

Even though Mendelsohn is relatively new to the MCU, he’s not the only one to argue hard for Spidey to stay. Jeremy Renner posted to his Instagram in August, saying, “Hey @sonypictures, we want Spider-Man back to @therealstanlee and @marvel please, thank you.” But no one has called Tom Holland’s Spider-Man a “pornstar,” so that’s a new one.

Spider-Man is a “pornstar” to Mendelsohn, and he names other MCU characters who should go instead

If you were wondering which Marvel characters Mendelsohn was referring to when he mentioned less important superheroes, he did not shy away. “In fact, I cannot think of a single character who’s more important to Marvel than Spider-Man,” he said. “You’ve got Hulk, you’ve got Thor… none of them are as important as Spider-Man. None of them.”

While some fans might disagree, a lot, with Mendelsohn’s picks on who should go, a lot of viewers might still agree that Spider-Man is an essential player in the MCU. “It would have been a disaster,” Mendelsohn said.

Mendelsohn also feels very passionate about Timothée Chalamet

The King actor, who plays King Henry IV in the film, isn’t just a big fan of Holland’s Peter Parker. He also really loves his co-star Timothée Chalamet. “He’s not copying anyone else, he’s a better movie star than we deserve,” Mendelsohn said. “We don’t actually deserve, I think, such a beautiful f***ing movie star, such a beautiful male movie star, that you can see and feel, you experience him as he’s doing it.”

That’s very high praise, but many would agree that Chalamet deserves it. He was nominated for a couple Golden Globe Awards and an Academy Award for his role in Call Me By Your Name

“He’s doing f***ing well and long may he reign. It’s a delight to see people get that movie star buzz around him,” Mendelsohn continued. “I have never heard audiences clamor and scream for anyone in my working life the way they clamor and scream for Timmy. And I love that.”

If there’s ever a chance to get Chalamet in a Spider-Man movie, Mendelsohn might just faint along with half the fandom.
