‘Frozen’ Takes Big Holiday Revenue
Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Frozen did quite well over the holidays, according to the Los Angeles Times, as the animated feature reportedly made around $28.8 million in the fifth weekend it’s been out in theaters. The jump in ticket revenue is likely a result of family free time over break. Frozen made money comparable to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which has been out for three weeks and is backed by a large fan base.
Tangled, a another box office success for Disney, came out around the same time as Frozen, and the timing appears to be a good one for the studio. Disney’s Tangled earned $591.7 million worldwide and ranked No. 3 in Thanksgiving three-day openings, according to Box Office Mojo. Frozen has not quite caught up with Tangled’s worldwide lifetime gross, which currently sits at $491.6 million, per Box Office Mojo. That said, it passed its fellow Disney film in domestic gross, netting $248 million compared to Tangled’s $200.8 million.
Kristen Bell voiced one of the leading characters in the film: Anna, the spunky but clumsy heroine out to rescue her sister. In an interview with Digital Spy, she explained that the character wasn’t always so goofy. The original script had reportedly been “more regular” than the end product would suggest.
“I was desperate to infuse her with all these awkward qualities that I had as a little girl, or that I have currently as an adult. … I thought, she should talk too much and talk too fast and talk to herself and trip, and be awkward, and wake up with a snort,” Bell told Digital Spy.
The animated film’s success was especially impressive when considering its competition. Catching Fire was also a big hit during the Thanksgiving holiday, and a number of big films came out in the same period. Frozen, however, managed to break a record of its own, scoring the best Thanksgiving debut weekend by bringing in $93.3 million during the Wednesday-to-Sunday period in November.
