Check Out This Hilariously Honest Trailer for ‘Thor: Ragnarok’
For many movie fans, one of the best things about going to the theater used to be catching the trailers for upcoming films. Nowadays, those same trailers are released early and even posted on the internet before they actually appear on a movie screen. Even still, fans love their movie trailers. The only problem? Those trailers aren’t always honest with us.
To fix this important issue, the good people at Screen Junkies utilized their YouTube channel to feature Honest Trailers. We spent hours watching their hilarious videos to come up with the 10 most outstanding Honest Trailers, complete with narration from Mr. Movie Trailer Voice. We even compiled them all into one excellent playlist at the very end. The Thor: Ragnarok trailer (page 6) may be the very best!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Honest Trailers took a look at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is the sequel to the drastically superior Guardians of the Galaxy. The second one is actually pretty good, comparatively, but you’ll never realize just how much of the movie is Drax laughing like a maniac until you see this trailer. GOTG2 works within its limitations, however, and there are several cool things to like about it. That includes awesome visuals, the constantly running Baby Groot merchandise ad, and the most emotional death in the MCU to date.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Honest Trailer has over 5.3 million views on YouTube.
Next: We learn the real reason why Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was the least likable of the original trilogy.
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Back in the early 1980s, Star Wars fans were dying to see the final installment of the original trilogy. Star Wars: A New Hope introduced a brand new universe, while Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back pushed the envelope and peeled back more layers. So what did creator George Lucas do with his final installment, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi? He made a kid’s movie with teddy bears to sell more toys. No, seriously.
The Return of the Jedi Honest Trailer has nearly 2.1 million views on YouTube.
Next: Two directors definitely weren’t better than one in the case of Justice League.
With the desperate need to answer Marvel’s success with The Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Warner Bros. rushed out a bunch of DC movies so they could team up a bunch of CGI super-heroes to take on a CGI villain in Justice League. The end result? A movie that felt more like a video game with bad writing and bad acting crammed into it. Justice League was the weird combined effort of Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon, and it ended up being a film that even the most optimistic fans thought was just kind of OK.
The Justice League Honest Trailer has nearly 3.1 million views on YouTube.
Next: This trailer is here to remind you just how bad Batman Forever was.
The average movie fan probably doesn’t remember just how many problems Batman Forever had, and there’s a good reason for that. It came out after two pretty solid Tim Burton Batman movies and just prior to the wretch-inducing pile of rhino poop called Batman & Robin. Somehow, a movie from the 1990s with Jim Carrey, Tommy Lee Jones, and Nicole Kidman was extremely underwhelming. Oh, and Val Kilmer played Batman. Remember him?
The Batman Forever Honest Trailer has over 1.9 million views on YouTube.
Next: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith wasn’t that bad, but it definitely wasn’t great.
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
There is plenty in Star Wars that is ripe for parody, but few of the saga films have more unintentional laugh-out-loud moments than Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. George Lucas was in a crunch with his prequel trilogy, having completely botched the first two installments and needing to finish strong to complete Anakin Skywalker’s fall to the dark side. The end result was a movie that most fans remember as “the one that wasn’t quite as bad as the others.”
The Revenge of the Sith Honest Trailer has over 7.9 million views on YouTube.
Next: We’re still laughing after seeing this trailer for Thor: Ragnarok.
Marvel changed up the format for the third installment of the Thor trilogy, getting rid of Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings’ characters and instead making a movie that wasn’t terrible. Thor: Ragnarok didn’t take itself seriously, leading to a hilarious effort that pokes fun at itself while bringing an awesome action movie. Jeff Goldblum makes an appearance as a caricature of Jeff Goldblum, and amazingly he pulls it off.
The Ragnarok Honest Trailer has nearly 2.1 million views on YouTube.
Next: As great as Captain America: Civil War was, we still like to poke fun at it.
Captain America: Civil War
Because Marvel fans just can’t get enough of their favorite heroes spending more time fighting each other than actual villains, Captain America: Civil War gave them an entire movie about it. As their Honest Trailer points it, this movie isn’t actually all that dissimilar from Warner Bros.’ Batman V. Superman, only it’s actually more enjoyable. No Marvel movie would be complete without Civil War‘s final scene, however, which wraps it all up in a semi-neat bow.
The Civil War Honest Trailer has over 7.8 million views on YouTube.
Next: The Academy considered The Martian a comedy, but its Honest Trailer is where the real humor lies.
It’s no secret that the United States has spent a whole lot of money rescuing Matt Damon, and The Martian is no different. Damon’s character, botanist Mark Watney, gets left behind on a Mars mission and has to figure out how to survive the cold, harsh elements of the red planet all on his own. The movie features all the excitement of space travel with all the even-more-excitement of doing math, farming in your own poop, and eating potatoes.
The Martian Honest Trailer has over 5.7 million views on YouTube.
Next: Breaking Bad is such a memorable TV show, it gets its own Honest Trailer.
This isn’t actually a movie, but Breaking Bad is great enough to deserve its own Honest Trailer. Starring Malcolm’s dad, Breaking Bad is about the American health care system that drives patients to cook meth to pay bills. Following the life of Walter White over the course of two years, in which he gets lung cancer, starts cooking meth, kills a bunch of people, builds an empire, kills a bunch of Nazis, and dies. Also, it spun off an equally great show in Better Call Saul, which will probably get its own Honest Trailer someday.
The Breaking Bad Honest Trailer has over 14.2 million views on YouTube.
Next: Unsurprisingly, the extremely meta Deadpool Honest trailer is as funny as its source material.
You might have heard Deadpool is the largest-grossing R-rated movie next to Passion of the Christ. That’s a big deal for a movie that spent most of its own history not being made. Ryan Reynolds stars as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, the wise-cracking anti-hero with a heart of gold. This is an extra special version of Honest Trailers, because they actually pulled off bringing in Reynolds as Deadpool for it. Even more comedic gold than usual.
The Deadpool Honest Trailer has over 20.9 million views on YouTube.
